I'm going to UCSD in the fall, and am thinking about changing my major from Sociology to Urban Studies and Planning. I might minor in Soc or maybe even double major though. Does anybody know anything about the USP program there? Does a USP degree make decent money?

Im still pending for UCSD for the USP major. Got accepted at Davis for community and regional development. Actually Im still considering Davis even if UCSD accepts me.

First off Davis' major is a BS while SD's USP is a BA. No offense to BA but BS is more in-depth and prepares you more as a professional. And after some research urban/regional developers require master degrees. Usually BA prepares you to go for many other ways afterwards (somewhat like training your interests).
Also UCSD's USP is more about the city of San Diego itself. Examples are they require upper division students study and bring out plans for San Diego.
Third reason is in a lot of classified ads says "a BS degree required"

This is a website explainning the job of a urban planner, stats on how much they get paid and nature of their work.
Urban and Regional Planners

What I heard from my frd is that Davis' major for this requires a lot of writing (LOTS) and an internship is required for graduation. Im not sure does UCSD requires it but I think they do mention about having internships.

Well....SD is a higher -ranking school.....thats why I am still considering. Good to hear im not the only one interested in urban planning. Whenever I tell people my major they think its weird since its not that popular. In fact I just got put down again yesterday again....hope I wouldnt be "pushed" to go to SD just to show them I dont suck!

Hope Im not being off-topic and this answer helps~

That actually helped alot. I'm really wanting to do the USP major, but i'm still hesitant about the job prospects. Is a BA that much different than a BS? I think an internship is required for UCSD as well. Also, at UCSD, you can choose to emphasize what you want to concentrate on. What are you looking to go into after your degree?

Actually you need to choose something to emphasize on at Davis too. My family thinks i should have a "better" major...something like nursing, accounting...those that sounds like you can make lots of money. But my interests are really at urban planning. If Im going for Davis Id probably continue with a master and most likely start my career there. If I go to SD...ill try my luck for a job if not I think ill go for nursing,,,,as they wish.

BS...more about math and science, but this major mostly just requires statistics and ....dun think theres science classes like physics chemistry biology. Weird huh?

BA...more like arts and humanity.

Oh alright. That made me feel alot more comfortable with the major. Do you think it's easy to get a job straight after graduation?
