Changing number of children in college...

We were going to start my second son in college starting this fall but have decided to wait a term and start him in the winter. When we filled out the fafsa we said we would have two children in college. Does anyone know what I need to do about this and how much it is going to change how much aid my son who is in college will get. We were just getting ready to send off his tuition!

Just update the FAFSA for that and then let the school know you have done so. They should be able to pull in the new data and update.

Changing from 2 in school to 1 in school will double the parent generated part of your FAFSA EFC. Any part generated by student income/assets will not change. How much affect this will have will depend on what sort of aid he was eligible for.

But as he will still be starting school during the 2009-2010 school year I am not sure what you should do. The question asks about how many students will be enrolled during the 2009-2010 school year.

Your son will be. I would read that as it being ok to leave the FAFSA as is. But I am not a financial aid officer. Hopefully kelsmom or nikkil will see this and chime in.

If you plan to have him enroll during the 2009-10 award year, then you would have 2 in college during the 2009-10 award year. You don’t need to update. No one lets us know when a student who attends in fall doesn’t attend in winter!

Obviously, some schools might feel differently … but according to the language on the FAFSA, you are being asked if he will attend in 2009-10, and he will.

When I had 2 in college, my daughter’s school required verification of attendance from my son’s school. (My son was at an in-state public and not receiving financial aid at that point – his EFC exceeded his COA – so the situation didn’t apply in reverse).

My daughter’s school funded her grant AS IF my son was NOT in school – when they received the verification of attendance, they then increased her grant by roughly the equivalent of my son’s tuition.

Hmm…seems to me that we needed to complete forms for both kiddos’ schools telling them WHERE the sibling was attending college. This was received right at the beginning of the fall term.

Kelsmom and Swimcats…I agree that the FAFSA says what it says…would this OP list the college where the sibling will be enrolling in January??

That is what I think OP should do. The school may decide to collect some type of verification of enrollment - if so, the parent can explain the situation at that time & ask for guidance.
