Changing Professors

I just checked out chem professor and chem lab professor or rate my teacher. The one for lab is apparently awesome, but the one for the actual class is not ranked so well...Is it possible to change or switch professors?

For the record, lab courses are all taught by TAs, however, they all list the same instructor, who is generally not involved in the actual lab. (Pretty sure its Professor Witten, who handles lab scheduling and who the TAs report to).

I’m pretty sure that you can change the course you’re registered for, assuming you’ve already attended orientation, as you already know your schedule. However, it might be tricky to do so. You’ll need to find a section of the course that has a professor you want, has open seats, and that doesn’t interfere with your schedule (you can use the “Schedule of Classes” tool on myneu). Generally, you could just click on “Course Registration” (under the self service tab), and then click on “Add or Drop Classes”, where you could remove your current chemistry class (each class has a drop down menu next to it, just open the one by the chem lecture and select drop), and add the CRN (five digits, next to the name of the course when you look it up on the Schedule of Classes) in one of the slots at the bottom, and then hit submit. However, while you may be able to do this, Chem 1 requires you take a recitation. Your current recitation assignment corresponds with the professor you currently are assigned to take, and its not necessarily obvious which other recitation sections match that professor. Ultimately, you’ll probably need to contact an advisor and ask for there assistance in sorting this out.

How accurate do yo think those ratings are? My son has a couple of professors who were panned-but he’s going to go find out for himself.

Doesn’t NEU have a system of their own? I recall a parent telling me about it and that her student said it was more accurate than this rate my professor one.

Ratemyprof is semi-reliable, if every single review sucks then it’s a good sign that the prof isn’t good. But even good profs get a few bad ones here or there, especially from kids who just didn’t do well in the class. You can also check TRACE reviews which are done by the school, listed under self-service.

Who is your chem prof? I guess I’m out of touch with chem 1 profs these days, but most of them are decent (Davies is the best). Wiseguy is right-- the prof listed for lab is just in charge of chem labs, not your instructor for the actual lab (you’ll have a grad student TA).

Chem 1 is probably jam-packed full at this point. There may be spots that open up during the first few days of class, so if you really don’t like your prof, you can check the course availability once school starts and try to switch during drop/add.

Yes TRACE-that’s it. Thanks!
