Hello,

I am currently majoring in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and I was wondering what were the possibilities of switching into Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley. I realize that BioE and EECS are extremely impacted so it's basically impossible to get into those majors, but is that the same for MechE as well? I've seen the 2009 acceptance rates for COE for each major, but it never mentions anything about the acceptance rates of students switching into the majors.

If there is anyone on this thread that was able to switch into COE from L&S, please let me know! What engineering discipline did you switch into and how difficult was it for you? The GPA for switching into COE has to be a minimum of a 3.0 for MechE but I'm assuming that most people applying probably have 3.6+ GPAs. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Umm, if you want to ME, you do ME. I myself switched from L&S to ME after my freshman year and I did not have 3.6 GPA but got admitted. What they’re looking for are (in order of importance) 1. If you are in track to finish your undergrad in 4 years, 2. An essay why you want to switch, and 3. your GPA.
Sorry if I sound bit like a snob, but I am just in a bad mood right now so I apologize. If you are interested in more details, send me a message and I’ll give you a much more comprehensive response.

I just switched this semester from L&S to Mech E (got the acceptance email last monday). I did not have a 3.6 technical GPA. A lot of factors go into determining if you will get in or not. As the previous poster has said, you need to be able to finish the degree in four years. Also, you must be able to demonstrate your passion for the major in the essay you write (especially if your techincal GPA is on the lower side). And yes, it is a bit easier to transfer into Mech E (and the other majors such as Nuclear E) than EECS or BioE.

Good Luck!
