I have been accepted into the class of 2013 and at the time of my application I have indicated that my intended majors are Environmental Studies and Economics. My mind has changed since and I assumed that it would not matter, particularly for US unis who unlike UK unis do not offer you admission depending on your course selection.

After logging into my Brown account and viewing Student > Student Records > View Student Information, I get this:

Excuse me if my question is stupid, but, does this mean that I cannot change my intended major(s) and must stick to those, should I choose to attend Brown?

We throw out whatever it is you applied as the first day you get here. You don’t have to declare anything until the end of your sophomore year and even then can change it up until the end of your seventh semester.

The only way this will affect you is who is assigned to be your adviser; chances are you’ll get someone in either environmental studies or economics. This happened to my daughter, who also said one concentration in her application and changed her mind almost the day after she mailed it in. She switched advisers when she got on campus.

Mine kept my “intended major” sitting there until I declared officially my sophomore year, then it switched. Like they’ve said, I think they probably use it for assigning advisers…except you can just ask to get an adviser in another area if you wish instead anyway.
