Changs to a Manuscript after Acceptance

<p>A bit of an urgent question here.</p>

<p>I had a manuscript accepted for publication last weekend (it was a 2nd revision, FWIW). The manuscript was thus sent to the publishers and I anticipate getting a "proof" this week or next.</p>

<p>I just found an article that is about 80% related to mine, that was published in the 1980s. I seriously need to reference that paper. But should I do at this point? Should I email the editor and ask him to make changes? Is it common to do something like this after acceptance?</p>

<p>Yup, email the editor, and explain the situation, asking to make necessary changes before it goes to proof. If it is too late, ask if you can make the changes when it is in proof.</p>
