Chapel Hill Chances?

I want to attend UNC Chapel Hill, but I don’t know how good my chances are of being accepted into there. Please evaluate my chances?

I’m currently an instate junior. I’m a male asian.

My stats:

Weighted GPA: 4.21 (Will be over 4.3 after this semester)
Unweighted GPA: 3.93 (will probably drop due to AP English)
My school doesn’t do class ranks (except for the top 10), but percentage ranks based on GPAs. I’m currently in the top 20%, but I will be in the top 10% after this semester. The top 10% are students with a GPA over 4.3. Since I go to a private school, there are many competitive and very privileged kids here. I come from a low income family so I go here thanks to financial aid. Based on previous classes here, about 80 kids apply each year to Chapel Hill but only half get accepted.

I took the SATs in 7th grade and got a 1380. I haven’t taken the SATs since but I will in 3 weeks. However, I have my PSAT score to help evaluate my chances. I got a 161 last year. However, I got a 191 on my PSAT this year, which is a 30 point jump from my score last year. 9 points away from 200, but I’m very proud of the 191.

Here is what I got on each section:

Reading: 65 (which translates to a 650)
Math: 65 (which translates to a 650)
Writing Skills: 61 (which translates to a 610)

I’m aiming for at least 2000 on the SAT. I will probably take it 3-4 times this year.

My Freshman Year Classes and Grades (7 point scale):

Religion: A+ for both semesters (It’s a Christian school if you’re wondering)
Advance English: A for both semesters (highest English course offered for freshmen)
Chorus: A+ for one semester
Beginning Drama: A for one semester
Advance Spanish 1: A for both semesters (highest course offered for Spanish 1)
Health: A+ for one semester
PE: A for one semester
Honors Geometry: B for both semesters (worst math course ever)
Advance Biology: A for both semesters (highest Biology course offered for freshmen)

My Sophomore Year Classes and Grades (7 point scale was changed to 10 point scale):

Religion: A+ for both semesters
Honors English 10: A for both semesters
Choral Ensemble: A+ for both semesters
Advance Spanish 2: A for both semesters (highest course offered for Spanish 2)
Honors Algebra 2: A for both semesters
Honors Chemistry: A for both semesters
Advance World History: A for both semesters (didn’t place into Honors because I didn’t do well on the entrance essay. Also, you can’t take AP World History until junior year, so Honors is the highest you can place into for 10th grade.)

My Junior Year Classes and Grades (at the moment and is still the 10 point scale):

Religion: A+ (will be for both semesters. This class is literally a joke.)
AP English: B+ for 1st quarter (and currently for 2nd quarter. Hoping to keep a B+ for this semester and the next)
Honors Concert Choir: A+ (will be for both semesters. And yes, I get 5 points for a class where you just sing.)
Honors Spanish 3: A- for the 1st quarter (currently, I have an A for 2nd quarter. I will get an A for this semester and the next)
Honors Pre-Calculus: A for 1st quarter (and currently for 2nd quarter. I will get an A for this semester and the next)
Honors Physics: A- (92.79…like wow.) for 1st quarter (A for 2nd quarter so far. I will get an A this semester and the next)
AP US History: A for 1st quarter (and currently for 2nd quarter. I will get an A for this semester and the next)

And for the AP English and APUSH national exams, I’m hoping for at least a 3 on them but I’m aiming for a 4.

And for senior year, I plan on taking the following courses:

Religion (it’s a requirement. #catholicschoolprobs)
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Biology
Honors Anatomy and Physiology (chose this and AP bio because I hope to go into the medical field in the future)
AP Calculus AB
Honors Concert Choir
AP Microeconomics (for one semester. I will take the national exam)
AP US Government (for one semester. I will take the national exam)

I received first honors on each quarter and semester. Enough detail about my classes and grades. I haven’t done much extracurricular activities in my freshman and sophomore years. Now I’m trying to make up for it this year.

Extracurriculars:

  • Godspell (freshman spring musical. Took up so much time after school everyday but this could go on a college app right?)
  • Diversity Club (wasn't really active during sophomore year but I'm very active now. I'm the secretary and main board committee right now. I'm hoping to be President next year.)
  • PROD Club (otherwise known as the songwriting club. I founded it this year and am the president.)
  • Honors Choir (I don't know if it counts as an extracurricular, but singing, for me, is something I love to do.)
  • Lifestyle Club (A club about health and self-improvement created by one of my friends this year. I'm just a member though but I'm more involved than other members, doing things like creating a design to promote the club. I really like drawing and art in general but I'm not taking an art class because I chose choir over art.)
  • Investment Club (I joined this year. The only thing we've done so far in the club is an online stock market competition. Currently in 11th place out of 30 if you're wondering.)
  • HOSA (otherwise known as Health Occupations Students of America. I joined this year. We aren't doing the tournaments this year but we are hoping to next year.)
  • Missions Abroad (otherwise known as the Missionaries of the Poor Club. I joined this year but I really want to be involved. I think this is a great club. I'd really like to help in anyway that I can. I hope to volunteer at the mission later this year)
  • Filming (My dad films weddings as a side job and I help film with him. I've been doing this since 7th grade. It has taken up a lot of my time on weekends, especially Saturdays.)

I will be in the National Honor Society in the spring. I will be tutoring others at school next year as a result.

Also, I just sent in my application to volunteer at the hospital. If I get accepted, I will volunteer every Saturday morning during the school year. Then during the summer, I will volunteer during some weekdays. In addition, I just acquired a summer internship at a doctor’s office.

I will also be attending Chapel Hill in May for their Project Uplift program. I was nominated by my counselor. I basically get to experience life in college there for two days, doing things such as attending classes and sleeping in dorms. If you want to find out more about it, here’s the link: http://admissions.unc.edu/project-uplift/

I also have other extracurriculars but I don’t know if they will count (or should be included in my college application.) I used to take piano lessons, but I stopped two years ago. I still play the piano for fun. I also used to play the guitar and the trombone if that’s worth noting, but this was years ago. I like to sing (as I’ve said before) and song-write. I did debate club during sophomore year for 3 months. I quit because my family couldn’t afford to pay all the fees for each tournament. It’s literally $30 to $50 for each tournament. I did Academic Games in middle school. For two years, my team placed 1st place for Presidents (a competition where you basically have to know every single fact about our nation’s presidents.) at nationals. I placed 20th in the nation in 6th grade. I didn’t go to the nationals in 7th grade due to an accident. Anyways, I went to nationals in 8th grade and placed in 11th place (technically 4th place due to people getting the same scores). I could’ve been in 3rd place but I changed my answer on one round and and got it wrong. Oh well.

I’ll stop now. As you can tell from my writing, I’m a talker in real life. I’ve probably written too much. Kudos to anyone who actually reads all of this. Hopefully, this is enough to evaluate my chances of getting into Chapel Hill.

Twigs, have you spoken to your counselor about your chances? He/She is probably the best source of advice than a random answer here. There is a ton of information out there about what students tend to be accepted. Have you read the threads here? CH decisions will be coming out in a few weeks so I am sure there will be a ton of information then as well. Stay tuned!

Honestly, if you are in state, theres a pretty good chance you will get in. the only thing that will let you down is your sat scores if they are consistent with your psat. otherwise i say get ready to be a tarheel!
