Can anyone comment on the basics of the CS department at Chapel Hill? I have been accepted to the program. Through my research on the CS website, I have not been able to find much information on the size of the undergrad department, avg starting salary, avg class size specific to CS, etc.

The main reason I am asking this is because I am deciding between attending Maryland(OOS) or Chapel Hill(in state) for Computer Science.

Thanks.

As far as I know, UNC Computer Science is not as well known, however I believe they will be soon. They rose 3 ranks from last years ranking. 28 to 25.

*I applied as well for CS this year. Did you apply through RD?

I applied EA and was accepted.

Do you have access to ConnectCarolina and the class registration/search system? You can search for CS classes (under COMP) and look at class sizes. The bigger classes like 110 and 401 have 250-300 per section, more advanced ones like 576 and stuff have 25-35+.

I’m not sure about the exact numbers but its small enough that you’ll probably know every CS major in your year if you’re not really anti-social. Its much smaller than biology/chemistry/etc.

Most companies who hire at UNC CS are smaller ones based out of RTP where I think the average salary for starting CS undergrads is 60-70k. Google, Microsoft and other big companies do recruit here though, and salaries there are typically 100-110k+.

FWIW I’ve worked at a big software company and there were more people from Maryland there than UNC.

I suppose this is true, but luckily CS isn’t one of those majors where you need to go to a top ranked program to get a job.
