I am going to be a bio major on a premed track. so I want to pick a school based on these criteria:

-better premed school(do both of these schools of premed committees?)
-natural sciences(ok this is probably unc but is nc state's even comparable?)
-presence of greek life, i don't like greek life very much but ironically i am considering a premed frat
-social scene

in my mind, these schools are pretty equal in school pride and athletics so i am taking that out of the equation.

Just a little bit of background about myself. I am completely dedicated to being a good student, being a doctor is my dream. When i am not studying or volunteering, I am training mma. I cannot stand most frat guys or sorority girls(but ironically enough again, im rooming with 2 frat boys next semester since they arent all that bad). I do not party at all and I dont even drink alcohol anymore. I hate how my current school turns into a ghost town on weekend and there is nothing to do except for go to a frat party.

As a student who is bright enough to pursue medicine, did it ever occur to you to research the respective schoolâs website and/or their CC forum for the information you are seeking? In order to be successful in life, you need to show some initiative.

We can say anything we want. How will you know it is true if you donât do your own research?

Students at both schools are successful with Med. schools admissions. Itâs really more about your MCAT score and your gpa than which state u, you attended.

How do you know who your roommates (two frat boys?) will be if you havenât chosen a college yet? According to my Sâs experience NCSUâs Greek presence is less dominant than UNC-CHâs.

Undergrad schools donât matter very much so really I am picking more based on social scene than anything. I just wasnât sure if nc state was even comparable to chapel hill in the sciences

PackMomâs answer is spot on. The rest of the comments here are unhelpful and ill-informed at best.

You as an individual will have essentially the same chance of med school admission applying from either university. With med school, it will all be about your GPA and MCAT scores.

Iâd encourage you to choose the school at which you believe youâd be happiest and, therefore, most likely to thrive and do well.

S loved NCSU and the big vibrant city of Raleigh. He visited h.s. friends attending UNC-CH several times a year and felt that the social scene on Franklin St. got old after awhile( for him anyway). Maybe because he was used to being in a much bigger city. Said he was always happy to get back to Raleigh. Obviously, lots kids love it but S was not into the frat. scene.

Have you been able to visit both schools? Make appointments to speak with someone from the science departments at each school and ask about sitting in on a class or two.

Seriously ? UNC Chapel Hill is leaps and bounds ahead of North Carolina in everything except engineering. For pre-med, NCSU cannot even be compared with UNC-CH. UNC-CH is one of the best public Universities whereas NCSU is average.

Look at Graduation rate, faculty, teacher to student ratio, campus life etc. 22% of classes have 50 or more students at NCSU. 22 % is extremely high. Even big universities like Penn State have only 15% of classes with more than 50 students. NCSU has a 41% graduation rate vs 77% at UNC, think about it. NCSU has average SAT of 1750 but UNC-CH has 1950. UNC-CH is much more selective. Almost everyone average can get into NCSU whereas for UNC you really have to be the top in your class. This should be a no brainer choice for OP>

UNC-CH goes with University of Michigan but North Carolina State goes with Michigan State.

XremePower - You must not live in NC. You are basing your opinions on rankings and what you consider prestige. Yes, UNC is considered more prestigious than NC State, but that doesnât equal âyou get a bad education at NCSUâ. NCSU is very respected and has excellent STEM programs. If you want a good ranking - NCSU has the #3 ranked veterinary schoolâŠI think they know how to teach the sciences. NCSU is a great school for a pre-med student.

My S and his friends who graduated from NCSU in '09 are doing well in the world since graduation. All have well-paying jobs and many (including my S) have bought their own home.

One of the top students in Sâs major dept (not engineering) spoke at their graduation.
He had done very well at NCSU and after graduation was packing his bags and headed down the road to attend Med. Sch. at UNC-CH. Guess the UNC Med. school admissions board thought a NCSU alum. was worthy of their Med. School:)

BUandBC82 I donât have to live in Michigan to know University of Michigan is better than Michigan State. Same case with UNC and NCSU. This isnât like comparing UCLA vs UCB which is a hard choice. This is UF vs FSU where UF is the clear choice. This is University of Texas-Austin vs Texas A&M where UT-Austin is the clear choice.

A med school will definitely admit the applicant who went to a prestigious university. If both applicants have same GPA, MCAT and internship experiences but one went to NCSU and another went to UNC-CH, they will pick the UNC-CH grad. This is just common sense.

I am not disagreeing that UNC is the more âprestigiousâ school and Iâm sure the kids there will argue that the science classes are harder. Maybe they are? I donât know. I have a premed child at UNC and the courseload is very rigoris and the grading is not inflated. I have a freshman in engineering at NCSU. He is also finding his courseload rigoris. They have different majors, so I canât really compare.

The OP is looking for a school with good sciences that is also a good fit. If he prefers NC State over UNC, he will get a good education. If he does well in school and on the MCATS and does all the other things that premeds are expected to do, he can get into med school from NC State. It happens all the time.

As far as what student gets picked over the other when the two students are exactly the sameâŠin every single wayâŠokay, the UNC student would probably get the nod. BUT, in reality, how likely is it that two people and two situations are exactly the same? Sometimes personality makes a differenceâŠor where the interviewer went to schoolâŠorâŠorâŠorâŠor any number of other things⊠

The OP should go to school where he will be happiest. Believe it or not, lots of kids in NC choose to go to NCSU over UNC for lots of different reasons. US News rankings do not tell you everything you need to know about a school.

Afugiwa3 - To answer one of your original questions - UNC does not have a committee and NC State does.

" US News rankings do not tell you everything you need to know about a school."

âYou are basing your opinions on rankingsâ

Nowhere in both of my posts I mentioned anything about rankings so I donât understand why you keep telling me about them and not to base the decision on rankings.

Rankings arenât everything, you need to look at factors like graduation rate, faculty experience, campus life rating, class sizes etc. and look who wins UNC-CH, must be a surprise.

" Believe it or not, lots of kids in NC choose to go to NCSU over UNC"

I call BS on that unless its for engineering. Maybe a few but âlotsâ ? Donât kid yourself.
