Chapel Hill or UA full ride?

Any opinions on this. I have been accepted to the University of Alabama on a full scholarship- tuition, fees, board, plus a nice stipend. I have also been admitted to Chapel Hill, no invite to scholarship day. I am pretty sure I am out of the need based aid category so unless I get some last minute merit from UNC, its full cost.

I want to study Business. UNC obviously has a superior program, however Alabama has a decent one. Both schools still have a great atmosphere- sports, partying, etc., im just worried about prestige and what people think when they hear alabama (for job purposes).

I would prefer Chapel Hill, no doubt. Im sure my parents want me to do as I please. But if I do go to Bama, they promise to finance my MBA down the line.

What should I do!? Will my undergrad from UA be a big enough difference in the business world from UNC to fork out the $30k a year for the better name?

any input would be much appreciated

Make the decision based on how YOU feel about it and what YOU want the most because ultimately that is what is going to make or break your future. If you prefer Chapel Hill, then go to Chapel Hill. It's great you have a full ride to UA, but the quality of the business program at Chapel Hill is supposedly one of the best. I'm not making any decisions for you, but I would choose Chapel Hill.

Of course, it depends on you. some of my relatives went to Bama, and I might go to UNC. I would say just find out as much as you can about both schools, and see which one you honestly thing fits your nature more. I have no idea how good Chapel Hill's biz program is - I'll just assume that its on par with all their other programs (aka great) - but I know Bama has a pretty good biz program, too. I would say that neither of the two schools are on either extreme of antisocial/nerd school or party 6 days a week, but Chapel hill obviously has a much more academic vibe, while alabama more so fits the party deal. Also.... do you like football, or basketball ? lol

As a UNC grad with lots of UA grads as friends and having been to UA on several occasions, and especially in light of todays economic uncertainties, I say go to UA; the Honors program there is very good and the economic advantages you will have by not being in debt upon graduation cannot be overstated. I love Chapel Hill and all of NC, however, UA has a great alumni program as well and besides, you can get tickets to UA football as well as basketball and it is virtually impossible to get UNC bball tix.

In another thread you say:

I can go in state for free (scholarship) or attend OOS UNC for $35K? Any suggestions?

How can you be a UNC grad in this thread and applying in another? What gives?

collegeboy, I just wanted to let you know I'm basically in the same situation. I got a great offer from UA as well (full OOS tuition, room and board, books, laptop, even free study abroad), but when I went to visit Chapel Hill I fell in love. The choice made itself :) So I suggest doing some thorough campus tours, and talk to people there. See what clicks.

Unfortunately, there's a BIG difference in the cachet attached to a degree from UNC vs one from UA. Despite the fact that UA is now getting significant money from the Mercedes plant that was built there, UA is still somewhere between a second and third tier major university in most surveys. Admissions standards are not even close to be comparable.

If you can find a way to make UNC work financially, I would recommend going for it. On the other hand, if we were comparing UNC and UGA Honors with a full ride I might make a different case. Sadly, neither of the two big schools in AL and none of the schools in MS are even spoken of in the same peer group discussions.

You answered your own question. No need to get too concerned about financing an MBA at this point--you might not want/need one 4 years down the road anyway. You would prefer UNC, and your parents seem to have no qualms with paying the tuition...so be a tarheel!

^^^ You hit the nail on the head.

If you go somewhere that wasn't your number 1 choice, you will always be wondering what if...you are too young to live a lifetime of wonder

yea, i guess i already have my answer. my parents say the same thing. Chapel Hill it is. unless of course I get into UVA or Vandy now, then money will play in. UNC would be the best deal so im sure its where i will end up. So Im gonna be a tarheel!!!

Yeah, but if you get some money from UVA...then I would look at them really hard. UVA ranks higher all round than UNCCH only 2nd to Berkeley and they usually fight it back and forth every yr...Chapel Hill is number 5 according to USNWR

Last I saw, UNC was #5 and UVA was unranked...and we beat them by 20something points...oh wait, wrong rankings.

If you choose to come to Chapel Hill, everything is about basketball from December to March!

^ Haha, love your post! :)

hating on UVA? hmm...

Kind of reminds me of a Bumper sticker I just saw...I root for two teams UNC and whoever is playing Duke.

How am I hating on UVA?

If anybody is being hated on, it's dook....the ultimate picture that summarizes UNC-dook basketball:

im from alabama, deciding b/w vandy and UNC. (if i get in vandy). however, I also got a full ride to UA. go to UNC...the results will be well worth the cost!

I went through this last year. I got a free ride to UA, and I would have been making money while in college. That being said, as soon as I got into a college that was OOS, Bama fell to the bottom of my list.

It comes down to what you want from your college experience, how you feel about Alabama in general, and what your financial situation is. If you have any questions, just PM me. I got a scholarship to Vandy, too, so I can give you some perspective on that end too.
