Chapel Hill or University of South Carolina?

I am a current high school senior that has been accepted into both USC and UNC Chapel Hill. As a current resident of North Carolina, it seems as though everyone I ask for an opinion from seems to have some sort of bias to the in state school. I would really appreciate a few honest opinions on which is the better school based on academic prestige (I am currently undecided, but am looking in to studying either English or psychology), student life, and other things of the sort.

Thank You! (:

Did you get into USC Honors?
If not, there’s no comparison. UNC-CH is one of the great public universities in the country with Berkeley, UVA, UMichigan, UCLA.

^^You can’t beat the price for UNC if you’re in-state. Agree that probably better unless in USC honors (have D there) then I might suggest you look at details. If you are in USC honors I would be happy to share what my daughter loves about it.

^^scmom’s straight up. she’s got the dope. unless it’s honors, go to UNC. It is a much better school in general and much more recognized nationally than usc (which everywhere outside of the southeast means u of s california).

Overall UNC has a better academic rep - but it really depends on your major. For example, USC has a better internnational business school, as well as a few other areas. However since you are undecided, it would seem UNC is the better choice for you at this point.

I agree that UNC has a great academic reputation, even out of state, where it is incredibly well respected. If you are getting the in state deal, then it is very well worth it. If doing psych, UNC seems to have numerous research opportunities for those who are interested. I have a friend going to USC, but she says she would love to go to UNC Chapel Hill if she could

UNC-CH. No comparision. The others have it on point,so…yeah. lol :p

Even if you are in the honors college at USC UNC is still better.

Not so fast…

UNC-CH offers a great undergraduate experience but I wouldn’t say that it’s well known nationally for its academics. I wouldn’t base a decision to choose UNC over USC on that, because USC has some very, very good programs as well, such as the business department that was mentioned up-thread.

Not even close. UNC.

UNC for the win. No comparison.

UNC. Anyone anywhere else would call you crazy otherwise. I think it beats USC’s honors program as well, not being biased. But UNC is a top 3 public state university REGARDLESS of the price.

Gee, just found out from this thread that UNC is superior to Michigan, California-Berkeley, UCLA, Virginia, Wisconsin-Madison, Minnesota-Twin Cities and Washington. Er…I don’t think so.

Lake Sr., I don’t know how you could arrive at that conclusion if curtiss didn’t say which two schools were better than UNC.

Anyhow, these sort of rankings are for macro perspectives and have to be looked at that way. The individual student might find an unranked state or private school a much better education than any ranked school to which she or he could have gone. It’s what he or she does there that matters, not where she does it. So where will you do your better work, and how can you best answer that question in advance of attending? Rankings might help. Campus visits might help. And so forth.

I don’t see where the OP made his/her choice. UNC, on paper, is the “better” school, but choosing a college considers more than what’s on paper. USC has an excellent honors program that is worth consideration. A student might find it to be a better fit than UNC, or the other way around. The cost of tuition- in state- or out of state- is another consideration. It would be too much of an individual decision.

I my daughter got into USC Honors and UNC i-state. Money wise it was a wash after the scholarships from USC.

We liked the Honors program but UNC felt right.

Wise words, dadinnc. Ultimately it’s about fit and comfort.
