I was accepted to Chapel Hill (in-state), with a slot in their honors college (375 out of about 4000 freshmen are in the program) and a summer research program (about 175 are accepted). As I am in-state, the cost is about $20,000. This can be covered using my father's post 9/11 GI bill, so I would graduate debt free.
I was also accepted to Georgetown University. After their financial aid and the use of the GI bill, it comes to about $11,000 a year.
I am interested in an economics major, and I am hoping to enter the financial industry or perhaps attend law school. Is there really a difference in the quality of the education and opportunities offered? If so, is Georgetown worth the extra $$$?

hmm still 0 responses. Anybody have any advice?

Can you afford the $11,000 a year because you can’t borrow that much a year by yourself? In general, I would say go to Chapel Hill. However, I don’t know much about the economic programs. My guess is that Georgetown would provide more opportunities for the financial sector aspect. Check the departments and see who recruits at each school. Look at the faculty and see what research/projects that they are involved in with private industry. Unless you find something worth the $40,000 difference, I would go with Chapel Hill.

Where is that $11,000 going to come from? Did Georgetown include Stafford Loans in that package? Run the numbers here and see what you think: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

The honors program at Chapel Hill looks good to me!

@ happymomof1 Yes, about 8,000 of that would be in stafford loans, and the remainder I would need to take out a loan. My parents are willing to contribute said GI bill, the rest would be on me.

I am not a big fan of prestige for prestige sake. The vibe at Chapel Hill and Georgetown are different. Georgetown is about DC…Capitol Hill, DOD, White House etc. Some pre-med students. Lots of wealthy people at Georgetown. Lots of legacy. Lots of all sorts of stuff. Great school. But think long and hard about the situation there.

Chapel Hill Honors is special. And Chapel Hill is a fine school. But its also big and a bit of a party school. To some extent the addage there is “Hard to get in, but easy once you are there.” I know lots of high school kids who said it wasnt that tough. However, Honors is another breed and you will work hard.

Getting into Law School from either school is about the same, though you LSAT score is really what determines where you get in.

Frankly I am always in favor of saving money for med school, law school and grad school. They aren’t cheap and scholarships are not nearly as generous or frequent.

My vote is Chapel Hill.

Only if you are interested in wall street would I consider Georgetown over unc in your case. Unc is great value. If you think you would be happy there then go for it.

An honors grad from UNC will fare just as well as a Georgetown grad. Save the $.
