I've been accepted at both Chapman and Emerson for Film Production and I'm having difficulty choosing. Chapman's got a great location near LA and it's a more complete college experience, but Emerson has a really good reputation and from what I hear, no problems placing students in the industry. Does anyone have an opinion on which program is better?

Chapman’s reputation is rising in leaps and bounds. I’ve heard that Emerson’s program is a little more slanted towards tv. We visited both campuses and I have to say that Chapman really impressed us. Unfortunately, my son was unaware of the Nov 1 deadline for film majors so he missed the deadline. But, he talks about the possibility of transferring there.

Congratulations on acceptances to two great programs! Both have much to recommend them. Are finances at issue? If so, are costs comparable?

Also: did you visit both campuses?

Both programs have great reputations, congratulations on getting in. The schools are extremely different in many aspects that may be important to you, as gladiator bird asked, have you visited? Money? I think list price for Chapman is significantly higher, what about after aid? Orange County small college campus, vs. urban Boston. About the only way they are similar is in having highly regarded film production programs.

We visited both: our impressions:
Emerson: top notch program for film production, but NOT near any of the major players (LA, NY). However they do say they like to get all the rough edges smoothed over then send their students to LA for a semester or more. They have a fabulous alumni network, the Emerson mafia that helps grads get into the business. Chapman is very close to but NOT in LA. To get LA internships you would need a car and be very assertive in getting the spots. That said, it is a lot closer than Boston. AND…the facilities and teaching are incredible there. When my son was choosing his school he went to each prior to applying- and knew which he liked best (and I’m happy to say he is finishing his freshman year there). If you haven’t visited yet, or are unsure really try to visit again and see where you think you would “FIT” best. For film, you can’t go wrong with either one. For academics, Chapman is stronger. But fit trumps both of these considerations. Let us know what you decide and why. That would be very valuable to those who read these posts later.
