Volunteer/Community service: journalist at a local magazine (since 7th grade), music outreach club (only 10th and 11th grade), Chinese cultural model (9th and 10th grade)
Essays (rating 1-10, details): my main common app essay was really personal and about overcoming personal hardships and I put a lot of effor into it, I’d say a 8.8/10 because I’m a pretty harsh critic of myself. My supplemental essay wasn’t as great, I’d say like a 7/10
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I have nooo idea because I signed my FERPA. But the two teachers who wrote for me both knew me decently I guess? One of them is my track and cross country coach and physics teacher and we know each other really well and he likes me, so for a guess like a 8.8/10. The other was my psych teacher as well as my APUSH teacher, and she didn’t know me that well but i did have her twice so yeah, maybe a 7.8/10?

Ethnicity: Chinese American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: around 200,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none lol

Reflection

Strengths: I suppose my ACT and common app essay? And my letters of rec, I hope
Weaknesses: probably my GPA and the lack of volunteering
Why you think you were accepted: I guess I was what they were looking for as a whole? I mean, my GPA and test scores are above their average.
Where else were you accepted/denied: I was denied to Minerva schools at KGI, but that was expected lol. Didn’t apply early to anywhere else

General Comments: If you were accepted, congrats!! If you weren’t, DON’T FRET!!! There are other schools out there, even if this was your “dream school”. You will be accepted to a college that is fit for you (as that is what college admissions look at), and you will probably end up loving it there. And for anyone reading this in the future, calm down, write your applications, put in the work, and things will happen the way they are supposed to happen

Overall, I have spent over 80 hours volunteering for the San Diego Film Festival.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Common App:

9 Common App Essay (create prompt)-I chose my own prompt in order to highlight my ability to make connections with people. I really wanted to press that the things I’ve done hav when because I have worked to meet people and make them happen.

10 Interest In Major-I wrote about how film has the power to change society and influence/inspire people.

10 Interest in Chapman- At SFA I stayed here for two weeks so I really have a feeling for the school and was able to show that here.

7 Advisory Groups- I wrote about how women are constantly pitted against each other to see each other as competition instead of working together and how to change that.

Film App:
10 Dodge Personal Statement- I wrote about where I draw inspiration from for things that aren’t really film related. I highlighted science, people around me, and cross-platform media.

8 Emphasis (Directing)- This is only really an 8 because of how short it had to be (150 words) I showed why I live directing because it encompasses all different forms of creativity

9 Writing Sample- This story came out really well, personally. It highlights a time at comic con when a little girl dressed as Rey thought I was actually rey and how interactions like that are small yet incredibly important.

VISUAL SAMPLE!!! I don’t want to rank mine because I’m bad at rating my own work but I was pretty dang happy with my film. I knew most people were gonna do something about teens/family because that’s easy to film and it’s relatable. So I did sci-fi. I made the set for under $100 and heck it looked good. Because there was no dialogue I had a LOT of sound effects that were woven together to make suspense. The story was about a pilot of a ship having to choose between saving themselves or an extremely important item on the ship.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

10 Common App- Physics Teacher- I am really into physics and want to minor in it and I have had homeroom and 3 classes with this teacher over the course of 2 years. This letter connects my love for science and film and looks amazing.

8 Common App- Creative Wroting Teacher- My creative writing teacher has known me for 4 years now and has seen me grow, as well as seen my involvement in films grow. He can talk really well about my leadership skills and such.

10- Supplemental App- SAG Actress/Friend- My letter for the film prod app was written by a Sag Actress who I met about a year ago. I’ve now gone to a lot of commissions with her and over the summer she hired me to make a custom Wasp (from marvel) costume for Comic Con. She talked about my ability to make friends and commentiond and how good I am to work with.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I got multiple trustworthy teachers to review it (My AP Lit teacher and two of my AVID teachers…one is a English teacher)

It was the first Common app prompt, I discussed my background. (Lived in Canada for 14 years, Brazilian Family, Trilinigual, Linked my experiences to how it resulted into the major I chose)

I was super creative when it came to the random questions part of the Chapman common app.

A lot of emphasis on how Chapman was #1 school in the “Why do you want to come here”

Did all optional essays

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Income Bracket: Low income (60k)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation, Trilingual, Immigrant, AVID

Reflection

I really don’t know how I got in with my ACT score and GPA… I pretty sure it’s was definitely my hooks and my essays and recommendations that got in.

My gpa is mostly affected my sophomore year. I had a 3.8/3.8 of my freshman year, 3.2/3.2 my sophomore year, 3.8/4.1 my junior year… (meaning 1st and 2nd semester)

I’m guessing the originality kinda got them to like me. So my advice… Show how different you are!!!

Strengths: Everything but my GPA and ACT
Weaknesses: GPA and ACT lol

General Comments:

I wrote another essay in the Additional Information section of the common app, explaining the circumstances of my sophomore year. I was kind of nervous about that because I heard it doesn’t really help you but I guess it did.

For anyone who doesn’t know what AVID is: It’s a college readiness program where it is designed for those who don’t have much resources and information to successfully apply to college/get financial aid… suited for those who are First Gen/Low Income

Good luck future applicants!!!

Decision (ED, EA, RD, accepted, denied, deferred, etc): EA Accepted

Job/Work Experience: Two years working as a hostess at a pizza joint, almost one year now working at a real estate office as a receptionist

Volunteer/Community service: all of the hours I did for clubs, coaching, working festivals in town, various activities within clubs

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App- 9/10, I really loved it because it was unique to me and how being a twin has affected my life. I’ve read over it so many times though now that I catch the small things but I definitely still love it. I had my Honors English teacher and AP Lit teacher read over it and they both really loved it.

Interest in Major- 8.5/10, wrote about how the mental health issues I’ve had have resulted in my strong interest in Psychology, was able to get extremely personal

Why Chapman- 8/10, explained that I love southern California and feel like I belong there, and while it is a hectic part of the world, Chapman is still a small little slice of paradise where I can still feel my individuality

What makes me Chapman- 9/10, related the open-mindedness of Chapman with the fact that I live in the Bay Area which is a very accepting part of the world and how I can bring more of these ideals to the school

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I don’t know because I signed the FERPA, but I assume one of them was extremely good because my relationship with her is somewhat of a mother-daughter bond, I even TA for her now. I’m sure the other was good as well, he was my psychology teacher and I believe my passion for the subject really shone through during my time in his class, we had a pretty good bond as well.

Reflection

Strengths: My essays for sure, I’ve always had a passion for writing and though I am my own biggest critic, I am extremely proud with how they turned out. Letter of recs as well
Weaknesses: GPA, extracurriculars, maybe test scores
Why you think you were accepted: genuinely not sure, I think I’m pretty different than most applicants I see apply to schools. I’ve centered my focus on specific things and somewhat broke the stereotype of a “dumb cheerleader”??
Where else were you accepted/denied: first acceptance

General Comments: I’ve read through too many of these threads and continued to scare myself. Acceptances are so subjective! If you want to apply then go for it, you never know what could happen. In the end it all happens for a reason!!

Decision: EA (whichever was nonbinding ???), accepted!
