Strange canyons and bohemian misfits? I’m moving with shakespearefan!

However, mention of “a hippe enclave of twenty somethings” does not inspire a great deal of confidence in a parent fixin’ to send a teen daughter clear to the other side of the country, g-bird. Although, a degree in film will probably bring in about as much
$ as the fire juggling hula hooping skills…

And momsings, I don’t know how wild things are up there in Wash state but if you do go canyon hopping in g-bird’s territory, you will quickly discover the things she’s omitting. Namely, mountain lions and rattle snakes! And I do mean literally; not a reference to conservatives. I fear for my trained pig already!

I hardly ever get the chance to go on this site but just saw this thread! We live in the OC and are very liberal compared to the majority conservative population. HOWEVER, what I think you should be looking for and I think you will find is respect for the opinions of others. You’ll find it at Chapman and generally you’ll find it in Orange County. As a person who views a car as a means to get from Point A to Point B, I actually don’t notice all the nice cars but I understand that they exist in California and at Chapman. Whatever (in Valley voice accent!) - who cares! The kids are really nice- we have had had many over from all over the country and I am over the top impressed. Great kids, great school- your kids are going to have a wonderful experience! I have yet to see any people walking pigs, and I think that Bohemian misfits are an urban legend…until gladiator bird invites me over to see them I’m sticking with the beach, avoiding the rattlesnakes that shakespearefan refers to, and buying a puppy :-)!

Valletta! You’re back! You mean, you still haven’t been back there on your bike yet? At least drive down Chapman Rd. until it runs out, and find White Oak Canyon Rd. It’s much less crowded than a drive to the beach! I was driving merrily along, when I came to this one part with all these interesting yet unfamiliar trees on both sides of the road forming a thick gnarled canopy over the road. I thought, wow – I wonder what kid of trees these are. Oh. Wait. A minute. Could they be perchance… white oaks? And there is a really cool looking general store back there. I did not find the falls but I’m going to next time. Lucky you can hop in your modest car and go find them tomorrow, however!

Missed the fire jugglers and hippies when we visited, for that try CU Boulder or Eugene. Trying to visualize OCELITE with dreds walking her pig in downtown Orange. Now if you go to LMU you could run out to Venice Beach for your dose of counter culture.

LOL, all of you! S-Fan: I appreciate you trying to throw others off the track, but it was Live Oak trees you saw, on Live Oak Canyon Road. :)

And before OC’s boho misfits are filed away as mere urban legend: the Bohemian Cowboy mix of wild OC also has a smattering of left wing intellectuals and eccentricity. For ex., we have in residence an ex-pat Marxist Brit (who was thrown out of seminary in England for being too radical) and a one-legged, east coast Jewish farmer affectionately referred to as our “foul-mouthed Dr. Doolittle.”

Just offering all you east coast and northwest liberals a bit of local color.

Enough said. No more secrets from me about the little known wonders of OC. Suffice it to say that there is plenty of variety, acceptance, and even a sprinkling of intellectualism in the OC. (Especially in the canyons…Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood hung out here, after all.)

Oops – you’re right! The oaks were the live kind! I hope Valletta isn’t lost somewhere back there looking for a White Oak Canyon Rd. that does not exist! He will surely be gobbled up by mountain lions and it will be entirely my fault. (Well, me and the lions.) So do the canyon-dwelling lefty intellectuals pack heat, so they can maybe help Valletta? Or is he a goner? I could see the firearms issue being a moral conundrum for you organic Bohemian hippie Marxist cowboys and -girls back there…

Oh my gosh! Did a lion eat off the leg of that nice Jewish farmer? If he’s from the east coast, they probably forgot to tell him about the mountain lions too!

“I’m impressed with the faculty and the spirit in this place. The ambiance, as we say, is good. Students are so close to one another without any problem of jealousy or envy is good. And all that together appeals to me.”

Q. What brought you to Chapman?

A. I am a teacher, which means that I am a good student. My permanent chair is at Boston University. I’ve been there for more than 40 years. I came here four years ago for a lecture, and then I came a second time. I found here tremendous faculty, first of all. …

And then, Professor Marilyn Harran, who is so committed to Chapman and to the subject of Holocaust, she came and convinced me. In the beginning, she called me and I said, ‘No’ a few times. She came back and finally, I said, Yes.'

So I’m impressed with the faculty and the spirit in this place. The ambiance, as we say, is good. Students are so close to one another without any problem of jealousy or envy is good. And all that together appeals to me.

OK, sukah, this blurb was already posted on the Chapman forum by another poster. Why repeat it? I’m not sure how you are navigating the CC site, but your posting of this Wiesel info on this thread is listed right next to the thread with the original Wiesel posting. Surely you see the folly in all this cutting and pasting? Anyone now reading your repost has already read the original post. No point in reposting old info we already have access to. It’s clutter. It’s annoying. We are more interested in your original thoughts and unique experiences.

Evidently your mind/brain Shakespearefan has problems at times (I am giving you the benefit of the doubt) combining two (2) thoughts/pieces of information and making a connection/conclusion so I guess I need to spell it out for you.

The subject of this thread is Is Chapman University superficial? Is it true that Chapman isn’t a great school to go to? The kids are stuck up and form cliques. I’m thinking of going to Chapman as a graphic design major and I want to be around people who are inspiring and not airheaded.

Elie Wiesel, a great man and a professor at Boston University for more than 40 years, states the following in regards to Chapman Us faculty & students:

“I’m impressed with the faculty and the spirit in this place. The ambiance, as we say, is good. Students are so close to one another without any problem of jealousy or envy is good. And all that together appeals to me.”

Now Shakespearefan, do you see the connection?

Suka, (I love that name now!) Do you see the fact that we’ve all already read that? It was posted before by another poster (whom you did not bother to credit.) No need to repost! Anyone checking the Chapman forum had already read it. Try making the connection that we are all connected and therefore this degree of connectedness runs to connect all these threads together into one whole connected fabric of connectivity! Am I still not connecting with you on this rerun thing?

Maybe you two can take your discussions into private messages, thanks.

Sorry, back. You are right.

No worries about the Chapman students acting like they’re still in high school. It’s the parents!
