Chapman Visit

Well I am going to make this short and sweet because I just spent 30 minutes typing this and lost it in the edit stage. If you need anymore info or have questions please pm me.

Me and my daughter decided to visit Chapman due to the BFA Screenacting program. My daughter is 99% sure she only wants to apply to stand alone conservatories, however, I thought it wise and to make sure there are not regrets, to check out different type of
programs to see if she would change her mind. Chapman was interesting due to being the only school with an established program (PACE just started one) with a BFA in screenacting.
She also wanted to see what LA was like and so CA schools made sense.

Here is what we found out and observed.

Chapman is in Orange, CA. The area was very nice, and Orange is a small walking town with a quaint downtown centered around a circel with streets jetting out around this. This past weekend when we arrived they were having an International fair and is was great. They had food and merchandise from countries/cultures all over the world; Irish, Mexican, German, Italian, etc. The food was great, the music was great, it was a wondeful way to break open the trip.

The area around the school is nice and you can walk to the metrolink which can take you into LA, Oceanside, San Diego, etc.

5000 Undergrad students

2000 Graduate students

Nice size campus not to big not to small.

Average class size 15 -22.

1st semester- Late Aug - Dec

Inter term semester - Jan/four weeks long/You can take 1 class for four weeks 3 hours
a day/ Great time to take a GE requirement or study abroad.

2nd semester - Feb - May

Chapman has some wonderful study abroad opportunities.

Chaman costs aprox $43,000, however, is very generous with FA giving between $7,500 - $25,000 towards that making them very affordable.

They are definitely an academic liberal arts program and have a FL requirement along with a 6 area GE requirement. with math, science, social science, art, history, writing...

You should apply EA which is 1 Nov 13.

If you have an audition set up prior to that your application dates moves up because it has to be in prior to the audition. You can audition as late as 23 Nov 3 and they will give you until rigt before that to get in the app. Please confirm this.

Dodge Film school was a wonderful facility and is sought after and very competitive to get into. Most of the students on the tour were trying to get into Dodge. We toured with students from CA and a student from Mexico. Most of the kids were going for Creative Producing, Acting, and Fim Production.

You can get in with lower then the average GPA/SAT/ACT. Dodge prefers students to be on the higher end.

If you are applying for a BFA in screenacting you have to get into:
1. Dept, of Theatre
2. Dodge Film School
3. Chapman
It is possible to get a year from, a no from another, and a red flag from another. For ex you can get a yes from the theater dept. and Dodge can say you are on the fence and the school and say no but they can all talk and you may get accepted. I am rushing this to make sure I do not lose this again so if you need more of an explanation please let me know.

You have to auditon on campus.

Hope this helps I have more information if needed.

Sorry for the spelling errors in my posts. I was typing really fast in order not to lose it and did not review well due to losing the original post in the edit stage.

I also wanted to clarify the FA amount. I think this is academic and talent together and is from min to max depending on stats, talent, income, etc.

Gosh, I made a real mess of the BFA screenacting explanation. Point I was trying to make is that you start with auditioning for the Theatre department and then your application is sent to Dodge Film school and then sent to Chapman. Along the way you are “rated” a yes, no, or a maybe. It seemed as if the theatre department would be the most open so if you are a yes there with great talent then they would discuss you with Dodge and if you were a yes there you would go right over to Chapman to see if they give you a yes. They are looking for talent and students who they feel fit in and can handle the heavy liberal arts requirement/curr. If you have some red flags like academics that does not knock you out but they will all discuss to come up with a consensus.

Threed that happens to me ALL the time. CC logs me out and then I lose the post. I have started copying and pasting my posts into word before I submit.
Doesn’t happen on my phone though. Weird.

They offer a $10,000 talent scholarship and up to $25,000 merit scholarship for grades and test scores. My D and I were fortunate to have the Director of the Department give us our tour and spent an incredible amount of time talking with us. At the end of our time she gave us to free tickets to Stage Door for that weekend. I don’t know about the Dodge school but the one things she brought up (and I had no idea at the time if it was meaningful) was that they do not do a senior showcase in LA or NYC.

Bisouu, you are correct on the showcase, however, this was explained out to us and I must say what she said, mirrored what I have a heard from a few other theatre dept. directors and others in the field.

Explanation was that many of the agents do not come to these showcases anymore. Apparently this use to be big sometime ago and is dying down. Now there are alot of managers coming but less actual agents. Apparently these showcases are very expensive and so schools are rethinking this process.

When we were at Stella Adler they mentioned to us that they help students build a reel and then when they do the full length production they sent out to many of the agents something called an Industry Package (hope I recalled this correctly) and many of the actors get a call to come in based on this “package/presentation”.

Dramamom0804; Thank you for that tip. I think I tried to do this one time but it did not work out. I will PM you for the special instructions:)
