Chapman vs SUNY Buffalo

This thread is for a friend who got into both schools, Chapman gave her a $30K scholarship and Buffalo a $5K scholarship, so she would end up paying for

Chapman: $21K
Buffalo: $23K

which really isn't a huge difference, so while there is that feeling that Chapman will be cheaper, it isn't a huge factor. What she would like to know is where can she get a better education to study Communications, hopefully leading to a career in Advertising.

Any comments would help a lot! Thanks!

take Chapman and do not stop at Go

collect your $200

any reasons in particular?

How about between Chapman and Marist College? Marist would cost $28K but the scholarship there is negotiable.

Damn, Buffalo really is ripping off y’all out of state applicants.

I don’t know much about Chapman, but Buffalo, is very close to Canada and extremely cold. Thats why I bailed on applying.

Chapman is underrated and an up-and-comer, imo. The president is a dynamic mover and shaker type and he is leading an effort to raise the university’s profile, adding a Law School, building a state-of-the-art film and media arts center, attracting a Nobel Laureate in economics…

I’ll assume your friend lives in NY, since for a CA kid this wouldn’t even be a question, so this would give him/her an opportunity to experience a different part of the country — a pretty diverse, interesting and fun area, I might add. (The motto here isn’t “Ah well, another day in Paradise” for nothing.)

Chapman University is located in Orange, a quaint small town (often used as a set location for tv and film) with lots of restaurants and antique shops within walking distance. There’s a youth-oriented pedestrian shopping-movie theater mall not far called The Block (I’ll assume the university offers a shuttle of some sort), and then there are the beaches and L.A., though transportation will be a challenge. The students I know who attend are not slackers, but they are definitely relaxed, laid back and interested in having fun.

If your friend is going to visit, fly into SNA (John Wayne Airport) in Irvine rather than into Los Angeles. Much closer and easier to get to Chapman from there.

You would have to consider housing costs. Personally, unless money is not a factor, I would not pay 20K for either of those places. Are there any other options. Chapman in CA is on par with Cal State schools which are significantly less.

@vociferous this covers housing costs. Chapman gave her a 30K scholarship so the price to attend (tuition, room, other costs, etc.) is 21K for her.

I must have stated this before, she is an international student, so no in-state prices or US-citizen prices or financial aid. Just scholarships. Right now money isn’t a huge factor between those schools, because she already applied and that’s what she got, so there are no chances of applying to other schools.

@jazzymom thanks! that sounds helpful!

Chapman is on par with the highest ranked Cal-State U —CS-SLO — in the top 10 of Best Universities (Master’s) in the West. To say the private Chapman is on par with Cal States in general, particularly in light of the budget cutbacks the public universities have been hit with, is simply not true.

OP: Marist College is ranked similarly to Chapman, one of the Best Universities (Master’s) but in the North.

If your friend wants to live on the East Coast, Marist is the one I would choose. If the West Coast appeals, Chapman is a fine college.
