Sometimes the space provided below for typing the essay reads "Characters available 2000", so is the uploaded document also limited to 2000 characters? Further, should I upload my document in MS Words 2003 or 2007?

I have no evidence, but I assume the document wouldn’t be limited in number of characters.

Your document should be in .doc format (Word 97-2003 document), not .docx, but you can do this in Word 2007 by selecting “Save as” instead of just “Save”

just want to bump this thread because I have the same question, and I was wondering if anyone else had some input.

some of the schools I’m applying to ask a “why do you want to go here” type of question but only leave room for 500 characters in the text box, which seems ridiculously short to me, so I’m hoping that uploading a document will allow for a longer answer…

From what I’ve been told, you don’t have to stay within 2000 characters, but your uploaded document should be at most a page.

And aplomb, using the additional information space to extend one of the supplemental essays is not a good idea. If they give you a limited length for an essay, then that’s the amount of space you have; they aren’t going to go read something longer because you don’t know how to make your essay fit.

The only limit for an uploaded document is that the file size has to be less than 500 kb. That said, I would definitely strive for an essay that reflects you and fits within the college’s requested constraints.
