Wonderful. We toured and D applied to BAMA and got Prez Elite but in the end turned it down for Texas Tech’s full ride. I did love the BAMA campus.
Also don’t rule out doing co-ops to pay for school. Most look for internships in the summer but doing coops during the summer or school year can help pay for college as kids get between $10,000-25,000/semester… I wouldn’t bank on it since like a pandemic can happen… Lol and some programs canceled like Kohler did to my son but… Hopefully it will be a better year… Hopefully… Also schools like Keterring could be interesting where it’s like one semester on then one coop etc etc. Lots of hands on.
$140k is AGI on taxes. Next year it will probably be about $160k. I’ve done calculators based upon current income, but with increase in income financial aid will go down after first year.
How much can you spend for college based on last year’s income and are you willing to spend the increased salary amount on college or prefer to accelerate retirement savings?
Kids with lower stats seem “stuck” with their state flagships (with R&B) or lower ranked regional universities offering in-state tuition.
@hopefulmom13 previously stated that the NPCs said $30-35K but that she does not believe they can afford that.
She originally said there are no borders to where they would look and she was hoping for a full ride.
I think - there are so many fantastic suggestions in this chat that will come in under $30K - the Alabamas,UAHs MS States, Arkansas, New Mexico, Utahs, Murray States, Florida States, Arizonas of the world…and so very many more…there’s a lot of great info if she goes back and reads all the messages to more than meet the budgetary terms she’s laid out including even full rides.
Note that Webb Institute has one major, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
The curriculum appears to have a core curriculum of about 85% of the entire curriculum. There is one (humanities or social science) elective, plus a student-chosen thesis.

Fo a safety Alabama she would be guaranteed 28k merit to start
Some others to consider
FSU with OOS waiver could bring tuition down to about $6500 FSU Admissions | First-Year Scholarships
ASU you can estimate your scholarship here https://students.asu.edu/scholarships/newamericanuniversity?_ga=2.20651900.551993486.1629127484-1403026244.1628702464
Miami Ohio has good merit here’s a table based on weighted GPA up to 34K
This doesn’t equate to a bad educational experience, however, especially if honors programs are part of that experience.
Students with limited money (not enough to afford college away from home, even in-state public in many states) and not-top-end stats (that would get merit scholarships or admission to good-financial-aid colleges) are likely to have very few options.
Choosing a big state school also gives a lot more choices to many engineers. Smaller schools may have only one engineering option (like Smith, Webb) whereas a big public school might offer all areas of engineering and allow transferring between them.
If she really is open to ‘anywhere’, U of Wyoming will come in well under $20k for her. She’d get $12,250 as the Brown and Gold scholarship, plus $2500 from engineering, plus whatever other scholarships she can earn. The COA for OOS is estimated at $32k, but it doesn’t cost that much (they estimate misc expenses at $3000 and I don’t think my daughter spent $300). It is just a very low cost of living area, and the student ID includes all activities, even D1 football and basketball tickets.
Many of the western flagships or state universities will have good scholarships in engineering - Montana, Montana State, NM, Arizona.
The one thing to remember about engineering - you can’t look at the COA because the top schools, many have surcharges. So forgetting that college costs more than the colleges say - because you can’t account for the weekend trips, the late night outings, greek, etc. if you go that route of trusting the #s provided - it’s always more I’ll just say that.
Then you have many schools that have “supplemental” charges for engineering…then others like the Alabama that actually pay you ($2500) vs. charge you (if you have a 30 ACT). btw - while my daughter isn’t going there (my son does), she qualified for the $24K but then it was upped to $28K because she did the competitive scholarship app. My son was on the old scheme - he got $26K + $2.5K vs. $31K tuition. To my disbelief but thankful to my wallet, he chose Bama over Purdue because of the beauty of the engineering quad and mainly the dorms - and Purdue gave him $10K a year which is unusual.
That’s why Alabama has 60% OOS and are crushing NY and Illinois. But there are many other wonderful schools as well that are highlighted in many of the messages.
@hopefulmom13 - just make sure that in addition to looking at the tuition + room and board or college’s COA that you also take into account surcharges - schools like Purdue, MN, and so many others.
Good luck.
Is military service an option? Air Force and Navy have engineering on the “desired majors” list for ROTC scholarships. With her stats, she is very competitive (if she has a desire to serve).
