I will be visiting a friend at Columbia in a few weeks and wanted to take a look at Brown while I’m on the East Coast. Are there any cheap buses that do the route? I was looking at train fares and they are very expensive. I am hoping there is some sort of cheap “Chinatown” bus? What’s the cheapest way NYC to Providence?

Fung Wa (something like that) only goes NYC-Boston. Look at Greyhound or Peterpanbus.com (PP is showing a $30 student RT.) Both can drop you off in center Prov, a quick walk uphill to Brown. You could concievably do this trip in a day (arrive early/leave late.) Brown has tours, but no on-campus interviews. The campus is very compact and you’d have time to look around the adjoining Thayer St area and RISD.

I just learned the other day that Megabus now runs a NYC-Providence line, which probably would be cheaper than the Greyhound or Peter Pan.

??? The mega site refers you to Bonanza (same as Peter Pan) and Fung Wah. But FWs sub page show only a NY-BOS route.

[MegaBus US - Megabus.com Expands Express Bus Service to Providence](http://us.megabus.com/providenceroute.aspx) ?

Graagh- thank you! Where I looked, the web site hadn’t caught up.

Thanks for your help folks! I hope to spend some time at Brown next week.

Funny, Fung Wah used to offer bus service between NYC and Providence (I took it in Feb 2010), but they seem to have discontinued it.

Another option would be to take Fung Wah to Boston, then take MBTA commuter rail from Back Bay or South Station to Providence. I know that probably takes longer than just taking a bus to Providence, but Fung Wah is pretty cheap, and MBTA isn’t that expensive (certainly not as pricey as Amtrak). The train station is also just a 10 minute walk from College Hill, which is nice.
