Cheap but safe/clean hotel near campus

My son will be spending the summer at Michigan. He plans to sublet or rent an apartment/room for the 8-10 weeks he'll be there. He plans to stay in a hotel for one or two nights till he finds a summer sublet/rental. Does anyone know of an inexpensive but safe hotel near campus. He won't have a car so will need to walk from the hotel to visit possible housing sites.

The closest hotels are probably at least 2 miles from campus, near I-94 on State Street by Briarwood Mall. The area is safe, and considering they probably pack in a lot of football fans in the fall, they are probably clean as well. The two hotels very close to campus are probably quite expensive.

The Campus Inn and the Bell Tower Hotel are both on campus; they're both really expensive like dsmo mentions.

There are bus stops by the Briarwood mall area that go to campus.

piggybacking on this thread... my orientation is on the 25th of June, but the only flights to Mich that would get me to the orientation on time arrive there on the 24th at like midnight. What exactly should i do that night (the 24th)?

Sleep in the ugli (open till 5 AM). Personally, I like the soft chairs facing the windows on the main floor.

There's also a bus stop at the Four Points Sheraton (across the street from the mall) which goes directly to campus. There may be cheaper hotels in the general vicinity of the Sheraton, as well (along Boardwalk).

And the Michigan League has a hotel doesnt it, which is clean, right in the middle of campus and very very cheap. Don't they:S?

Lamp Post Inn looks pretty cheap and gets good enough reviews on Trip Advisor (Lamp Post Inn (Ann Arbor, MI) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor%5DLamp">http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g29556-d273613-Reviews-Lamp_Post_Inn-Ann_Arbor_Michigan.html)). There's a stop for the #4 Washtenaw bus nearby, so getting to/from campus shouldn't be too bad.

I'm not sure about this, but I assumed the Michigan League hotel was very expensive?

Microtel should be in the $50-$60 a night range. Not sure if the bus that goes on Plymouth goes that far though.

The web site says they have a shuttle that goes to U of M hospital and the campus.

The #2 Plymouth bus comes pretty close (it goes by Plymouth and Green). You could get on/off for sure at the Green Rd. park and ride, which doesn't seem like it's that far of a walk from the hotel. It would probably be best to use the bus to get to between campus and the hotel while looking for a place, and then use the shuttle service once you have a place so you don't have to haul all your stuff to a bus stop, plus you can go directly to where you need to go.

I am beginning to think I should rent out my son's top bunk.

Thanks for the information. I like the top bunk option....

I second the Microtel idea. The Michigan League is not cheap - $115 a night.

Has your son looked online for places to rent/sublet? I'm sure there's somewhere he can move into in a day or so.

He's checked out some places but says he needs to be there to actually rent something. That's why he'll need a night or two in a hotel.
