Hey guys, I'd really love to have a futon next year for my dorm. I don't need anything fancy, just something that's cheap and functional. Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a new (buying used kinda grosses me out) futon for under $100?

I'm pretty Walmart had some really nice futons for about 99 dollars-check there. I think I saw the sale a week or two ago.

I'll check that out. Anyone have any other suggestions?

i'd try ikea

I second the Ikea idea. I got a ton of stuff there for under $100. However, the last time I was at Ikea was August 1989. Still, you should be able to get a lot for cheap.

I know there's only about four weeks until most of you move in, but if you have nothing else to do you can always make furniture yourself. Work 8 hours each day on furniture and it will be all done by the time you move in. I built a porch rocker one summer this way. All you need are a few tools, some patience, music to listen to, and a lot of thinking in between.

Check the "free" section of Craigslist. Within a few days, something should pop up. If you want something less gaudy, they have a selling section too. Just cover it up though, and it doesn't matter what it looks like.

Craigslist is the best. My roommate and I bought a loveseat from this guy who drove out to our dorm and dropped it off for us for $35 total.

I <3 Ikea.

wait until you get some idea of where you will be living and how the room is laid out. You could end up in space where you cannot fit a futon. In addition, you would be suprised the number of students on campus that are selling/ giving away stuff.

Well, as I mentioned before, I'm a bit skeptical about getting used furniture. Not so picky about what it looks like, but I'm a little bit OCD about cleanliness...so I don't know if Craigslist is a good idea. Also, I've had someone go check out my dorm for me and they told me the approximate dimensions and what I'd probably be able to fit in there. I'm still planning on actually getting the futon once I'm down there, but I'd like to shop around before I leave. Also, MacTech- I dunno how well I'd do with making furniture, I've hardly done anything with wood ever, so it'd probably fall apart the minute I finished it...you wanna make me a futon? :-) Thanks for the ideas, everyone, I've looked around and Walmart/Target/Kmart seem to have the cheapest futons- all for about $99. I couldn't find much on Ikea's website, unless I went a bit higher with the price- although they did have an actual loveseat for about $100.

the cheapest futon type thing at ikea starts at about $149, so you might be out of luck there. I have one though and I like it, but be prepared to spend two hours trying to assemble it from some swedish directions.

Lol, perhaps I'd best avoid Ikea then. My Swedish is not quite up to par...:-P

Ikea's directions aren't really in Swedish, but sometimes it seems like it!

They have mostly these illustrations with lots of arrows and you're supposed to figure things out from that. We've had mostly good luck, though, following the directions and putting together a host of Ikea products. Like a coffee table, desk chair, small end tables, etc.

I just like buying all the little odds and ends from Ikea and putting them together as I please...different setups and such
