There are tons of cheap places in the area.. at least two dozen in Williamstown.

Here is a link:

I would recommend the Northside Motel

RomeDad,
I can't yet tell you if its nice because we won't be staying there until the end of next month. But I can tell you that the Green Valley Motel is quite inexpensive for the area at $70 per night including continental breakfast. We're hoping for the best.

I believe that after Thanksgiving is off season so places should be less expensive then. Good luck.

I liked the Maple Terrace Motel.

I'm very fond of the Williamstown Bed & Breakfast. It's right on campus, full of charm, spotless and includes a great breakfast. They'll most likely meet other prospectives at the breakfast table.

I'll let you know how the Northside Motel is (going Thursday). It was the cheapest I could find right near campus- wasn't a steal, but it should be fine. I'm excited to finally see Williams. I'm going with S for a recruiting weekend.

Ditto on the Northside. We've stayed there before, and though you can certainly find fancier digs, the place is clean and friendly and right on the edge of campus. Prices are even more reasonable during the off-season.

Here's a link to a site which includes a map of where each motel is located in Williamstown: http://www.williamstownchamber.com/directory.php?CatID=1

The Northside is super convenient - you can walk to wherever you want to be on campus. Just a plain motel - nothing fancy, but it's fine and you can't beat the location.

If you have a car and don't mind driving back and forth, a mile or so off campus, the 1896 Motel is a nice motel; it's my favorite of the Williamstown motels, but you're giving up the convenience of being able to walk onto campus. Ditto for Maple Terrace; the college website indicates that it is "walking distance" to campus, but it's a healthy walk.

Back from my stay at the Northside. It was fine- certainly not fancy. I had a good sized refrigerator in my room, but no clock. There WAS wireless internet, which is a top priority for me. I liked the location and it was easy to meet other people who were there for the same recruiting weekend.

The Hoiliday Inn in North Adams is 10 minutes away and is VERY nice and VERY clean...and NOT expensive in the least. The hotels that we saw in Williamstown were either VERY expensive or VERY run down looking. I would NOT stay at any hotel that has MOTEL in their name as they TRULY are a motel.

Hazzendad - have you stayed at the 1896 House motel south on Route 7? It really is more than OK - I've been staying there for years. And some of the other motels that look rundown from the outside aren't so bad. These are the same places that support a demanding summer theatre clientele year after year.

I didn't want to be 10 minutes away. I wanted to walk to campus and be right near everything. To me, that is the best way to get a feel for a campus in a short period of time. If I were going on a regular basis, I might be willing to try something further out, but the Northside MOTEL was fine- and I have been spoiled by nice business hotels (when I'm not paying.....) I had a clean bed, a shower, free "breakfast" (well, cereal and bagels) and wireless internet.

how much is/was the Northside MOTEL ???

Here's some history on the Northside Motel: years ago the Shah of Iran's son attended Williams. Before buying a house in Williamstown, he and his security detail lived in the Northside Motel for a few months. You'll have to ask Reza what he thought of the accommodations.

It was $89 Thursday night and $99 Friday night (I think). Not cheap-but nothing near campus was any lower.

My S went to Williams, was a swimmer, so I visited often for swimmeets. Maple Terrace IMO is far and away the best motel in W'town. A Swedish couple retired from the cruise line industry run it. It is always clean, quiet, has a continental breakfast, a great relaxing yard and pool when it's warm, right on Main Street within easy walking distance of the campus and Spring St.. I have stayed there several times and always have a positive stay. Also -- they rent out a few bigger suites, apartments -- great for graduation, weddings, etc..

Just returned from a weekend in Williamstown to visit our S and we stayed at Les Jardin on Route 7 (3 minutes away by car) and it was truly lovely. We had a fireplace in the room and the place was spotless and nicely decorated. $125 per night.

Le Jardin just reopened under new management after a major remodel. Glad to hear a good review. Does it still have a restaurant?

Are the Les Jardin rooms in the main building? The old Les Jardin rooms to the south of the main building I thought were bought by 1896. I'd be curious too about the restaurant - Les Jardin used to have a great brunch. Good to know there's another good option.

Yes, Les Jardin's rooms are in the main house and it does have a restaurant. We did not eat in the restaurant, tried Gideon's in North Adams instead and had an excellent meal there.
