cheap laptops

hey guys, I heard from a current student that people enrolling in UT gets a discounted laptop (~$60-70). can anybody confirm whether this is true or not?

A $60 laptop? I want one!

haha me too but that depends whether our dreams are, in fact, reality. which is why i need the help of all the beloved UT forum-ers to enlighten us both.

yeah the macbooks are the normal price minus 50-130.

so you save 50-130 dollars.

[UT Campus Computer Store - online store](<a href=“campuscomputer - HiED Tech Store”>campuscomputer - HiED Tech Store)

[MacBook - Apple Store (U.S.)](Mac - Apple)

A discount on a macbook needs to be like $500+ before it’s comparable to a similarly priced PC. The sad part is that I’m not kidding, you can usually find a similarly equipped PC for half the price of a macbook.

It’s no secret that PCs are cheaper than Macs. That’s because you get what you pay for. For the 4-year college student it is WAY worth paying the extra money for the Mac. You will use it everyday of your college life and it will contribute to many major assignments.

Or get the PC and hope it doesn’t get hit by a virus.

How is it worth the extra money? I still use my PC every day and I’ve not had any viruses in the year and a half I’ve used it. There aren’t as many programs for macs as for PCs. Macs look great, but I don’t understand what is supposed to be so magical about them. I use the macs sometimes on campus, and it is required in the computer labs for my German class. I have yet to figure out how to turn on the number lock on them (the ones in the language labs) so I can use the keypad.

Oh no, not this argument again! Mac or PC, use which ever one fits you the best! Both are great for college its just a matter of personal preference. PC for affordability & gamers… Mac for simplicity, design, & a different OS.

Edit: Get what you’re familiar with. Don’t get a Mac if you have no idea how to use leopard, I hate it when people do that! If you’re an average, below average, or advanced computer user go with PC. If you’re an above average or advanced user go with Mac.

I’m a mac person btw.

The PC vs. Mac war will never be resolved. To each his own…

PS I’m a pc guy.

someone show me a PC laptop that weights around 4.5 lbs, has 5 hours of battery life, decent video performance, and is cheaper than the macbook.

you can’t.

if youre a pc you can run windows on your mac and you’ll be very happy.

re: $500 discount. if the discount were any cheaper, students would buy the laptops and sell them on ebay for profit. well i know i would.

That’s an awful reason to buy a Mac! Plus the 5 hour battery life is exaggerated. It’s more like 2 1/2 hours on normal performance. 5 hours if the display is asleep.

If you’re a PC guy why would you buy a Mac just to run windows? That’s dumb, you buy Mac’s because you want a different OS.

so if you go to a UT-affiliated computer store (or does it have to be a store on-campus?), you can get $50-130 off of it? does it apply to all laptops, or just selected brands?

‘That’s an awful reason to buy a Mac! Plus the 5 hour battery life is exaggerated. It’s more like 2 1/2 hours on normal performance. 5 hours if the display is asleep.’

That’s just not true, Macbooks have AWESOME battery life and 2.5 hours is nothing for a Macbook, and this is the old Macbook not the new one that just came out that has even better battery life.

But I would never buy a Mac because it’s too expensive compared to a PC.

henryj, you can buy your laptop at the online store or if you prefer, you can go to the FAC building where the computer store is and pick one up. discounts vary per model. i dont know how much (if at all) the dell’s are discounted. stop by and check!

leeznon, there are other operating systems that people use that dont come with a computer. you make it seem like installing a different os other then os x is a crime. many people have leopard, windows and ubuntu (linux) on their macbook. if you dont have the need, then maybe your the below average computer user.

thanks athlon, i’ll probably check it out during orientation

athlon210: C’mon now. Having “the need” to install another OS has nothing to do with your ability to use a computer. And I say this from a multi-boot system with Vista, Ubuntu, and CentOS (which will soon be replaced with FreeBSD).

There is no best operating system, nor is any more difficult to use than any other - it just depends on familiarity (I’m speaking of relatively mainstream OSes - no Slackware, Arch Linux (that was a fun install…), Linux From Scratch, or any other such things included here).

Try things out, find one that suits your taste, compare prices on similar hardware systems and decide if the premium on whichever one is more expensive is worth the delta, and vote with your money. Yayyyyyyy.

No flame wars necessary.

cone, you seem to have lost the spirit on the conversation. maybe you did not fully read the entire tread, or at the very least to who i was referring to and their previous comments. there’s no point in typing again who said what, it’s all there.

Re: triple boot
why do you triple boot and what is your need? (rhetorical i dont care why)

isn’t one operating system enough? for some it is. if you buy a macbook, should you only run os x? no, i should run whatever i want, you run whatever you want. if i buy a macbook for the hardware to run a foreign operating system, so be it. end of story.

My only complaint was about attacking people (“if you dont have the need, then maybe your the below average computer user.” <- your statement). I agree with everything stated in your last post, and was saying the same thing in mine.

And yes, I read it before, and reread it again. Someone being annoying and condescending about a company isn’t a reason for personal attacks. Your refuting and that of someone else in the thread was more than sufficient.

i felt that i was attacked too and although it was not directly aimed towards me, it became personal once i read it.

“Don’t get a Mac if you have no idea how to use leopard, I hate it when people do that! If you’re an average, below average, or advanced computer user go with PC. If you’re an above average or advanced user go with Mac.”

i interrupted the quote as [below average people should not own macs, and that only knowledgeable (above and advance) people use macs]. coupled with a “hate” statement, the advice to me is derogatory and condescending. therefore i do not believe i crossed the line.

ASUS has a 10’’ notebook with a 7-9hr battery life…

you could get that to take to class and get a decent desktop to use in your dorm
