Is there a page on Berkeley's website that sells cheap, new laptops? I recall it posted here awhile ago, but I couldn't find it through search or old posts anymore.

http://tsw.berkeley.edu - Not exactly cheap, you just get the standard educational discounts at Dell/Apple/etc.

Usually you can pick up a cheap laptop from Dell Home with a $750 coupon.

if I plan to bring my laptop to college and use the internet there, or is home edition fine?

I'm assuming you're referring to XP Pro vs XP Home?

XP Home should be fine since I doubt you'll have to be joining a domain.

If you're an advanced user I'd recommend XP Pro just because you have a bit more control over the OS.

And finally: http://rescomp.berkeley.edu/gc/newcomp/ - can offer specs on what you need for a new computer.

*What I meant by "Dell Home" is their store for home and home office instead of Dell Premier/Educational, Dell Small Business, etc.

I know what you meant, it was just a coincidence, really :)
