Cheap Urban Universities

Hello all.

I am currently an out-of-state sophomore at the University of New Hampshire. I am looking to transfer for the spring 2012 semester because I feel as though this is not the university for me. I am extremely interested in the arts and just culture in general so I am looking for an urban university. I am interested in majoring in english, philosophy, or film. I do not care for a campus. My current gpa is a 3.62, last semester I got a 3.84, so I am looking for a "good" university to attend. I really cannot go over $40,000 a year. Thank you.

What state is your home state?

How about UMaryland (near Wash DC)…or one of the SUNYs that isn’t far from NYC?

New York is. I was kind of hoping to see other things than New York, I’m not sure if I’m being too picky or not. UNH is an hour away from Boston (closer than some of the SUNYs are to NYC) and I never find myself there. I am looking for a school that could give me the best urban experience, or close to it for the price. I have considered UMaryland but it is close to and not in an urban environment. I will most likely end up applying there though, thank you.

Pitt, Rutgers, UCLA, Michigan, U Texas- Austin, Wisconsin (Madison), Ohio State.

If “good” means better than UNH, there are still a lot of urban(ish) schools out there. And, even privates, after financial aid, will be under $40,000.

So,

Public:
UCLA
UCSD
University of Texas - Austin
University of Pittsburgh
University of Minnesota

The UC’s aren’t really urban though.

Private:
There are some of the ivies and MIT and such. Don’t know if they interest you all that much (i.e. Columbia, Penn, Chicago)
Georgetown
Carnegie Mellon
NYU
George Washington
Syracuse
Boston University
Fordham
Northeastern
American
Drexel

How about Washington, DC-----George Washington, American

Or Philly—Drexel

They are probably not cheap though.

U Southern Calif has all you need. They take over 1000 transfer students each year AND offer terrific FA for transfer students.

[Transfer Students - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/transfer.html)

Temple University in Philadelphia [<tuition rate=“” schedule=“” 2009-2010=“”>](<a href=“Tuition and Fees | Bursar's Office”>http://www.temple.edu/bursar/about/tuitionrates.htm</a>)</tuition>

*And, even privates, after financial aid, will be under $40,000.

*

???

How do you know that??? we don’t know if his family qualifies for aid. And, many privates don’t give much/any FA to transfer students.

The UCs will be too expensive…they’re about $50k for OOS.

The University of Texas (in Austin) will definitely cost over $40K/year for OOS.
http://finaid.utexas.edu/costs/110undergradcosts.html</a></p>

Wisconsin COA is over $39K/year, but under $40K.
Temple COA is about the same, about $39K/year. Philadelphia is more of a “city” than Madison, more “urban.”

Minnesota would be about $29K/year. More reasonably priced. The Minneapolis/St. Paul area is nice.

FIT is def for you.

@mom2collegekids, I know people who transferred and they all talk about how big their packages were (and these kids do not need that much FA). It isn’t a universal code, but I was just stating that it is possible.

I vote for Drexel, Minnesota, Syracuse, Richmond, Pitt, or Uni of Edinburgh(if that counts).

But yeh, my hometown is DC…So GW, Georgetown, Howard, American, and Johns Hopkins (Baltimore) seem like obvious choices.

Especially Howard :)

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities? Under $30,000 per year list price for out of state.

Virginia Commonwealth University is an urban artsy school in the middle of Richmond.
oos tuition and fees $23,000/yr.

In Chicago…DePaul, Loyola, Columbia College?

Investigate the U of Alabama at Birmingham.

+1 for VCU

When I read this:

I wasn’t thinking FA. ;-)

DePaul and Loyola are both in the low to mid $40s.
