Cheap Way to get to Berkeley?

Hi, I'm a fall admit, and I was just wondering if there's a cheap way to get to Berkeley? I'm from the LA area; the drive there would take at least 5 hours, and both of my parents are unable to take/accompany me. And the round-ticket is pretty darn expensive, around $300 (low-income family). So yeah, I heard from my sister's boyfriend that a few years ago, his friend got invited to an overnight reception at Berkeley and the school even offered him transportation since he was a low-income student too. Is this true? It sounds too good to be true...if not, is there any other way to get there?

PS: I know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but I really have to get there to verify my citizenship in person. So please help me out, if you know anything. I'll call the school tomorrow too.

Thanks in advance! =) and GO BEARS!

hahahahah!!! same here, i have to visit berkeley to verify my citizenship, but i was offered the overnight stay program for three days at berkeley…with everything paid for, including the airplane tickets, and everything else.

I was given a free plane ride to Berkeley for the overnight host program a couple years ago. A round trip plane ticket should be more like $220 if you buy early enough. Otherwise, you could take a bus like this:

[Transporation San Francisco : California : Services](http://www.cashuttlebus.com/services.asp)

I’m not sure how it is.

@UC123cali: is it the Reach! senior program? 'cause i got that too but wasn’t sure if transportation was covered
@Liquidus: that’s so cool! and thanks for the link. haha i did check out the different airlines, it was all sorta the same price range

yeah! its the reach program, they said everything is paid for, and you will get the airplane ticket once u meet a berkeley representative at the airport

Omg, i totally didn’t know it covered everything!!!
Ahh…i’m so stupid…=( I didn’t RSVP’ed then.
just my luck…but gratz for getting the free ride there UC123cali

If you need to travel between the Los Angeles area and Oakland (from which you can take BART or a local bus to Berkeley) at times that do not match the free rides, you can ask about the [“Chinese bus”](<a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown_bus_lines]"Chinese”>Chinatown bus lines - Wikipedia) and “Vietnamese bus” among members of those ethnic communities.

@everyone: thanks for replying to my thread! fortunately, i got an email confirmation back from berkeley today and it turned out that i got accepted into the Reach! program, so yay! free ride! again, thank you y’all!
