The closest grocery stores around me are:

Whole Foods (.4 miles)
Berkeley Bowl (.5 miles)
Safeway (1.1 miles)

How are these places? quality, prices, etc.

Are there any other places that you would recommend?

Out of these Safeway is probably the cheapest.
Even though it’s kind of far away I always go to 99 Ranch. It’s probably the cheapest (on average) out of all these and it satisfies my cravings for asian food.

I think Berkeley Bowl is cheaper than Safeway and if has a lot more stuff than Safeway does (especially cheese-wise; Safeway doesn’t have smoked gouda!). I also feel like the quality is better at Berkeley Bowl.

Is Bear Market similar to a regular grocery store? What kinds of things do they carry?
How close is Trader Joe’s?

I have to agree with dill_scout. I have been to Whole foods, Berkeley Bowl, Andronichos*, Safeway and Trader Joes and now I shop exclusively at Berkeley Bowl. I believe it has some of the best prices and greatest variety in food. Also in the back of the vegetable section there is a shelf of vegetables/fruits that are a bit over ripped, but only 60 something cents. Really great if you have less than a dollar and want a whole stalk of bananas to make smoothies =P

The cheapest place I’ve found is Yasai Corner market on College avenue across the street from Cole Coffee. I live on Alcatraz so I’ll usually shop at Trader Joes, Yasai, Market Hall and, at times, Safeway. Berkeley Bowl is too far and Whole Foods is too expensive and can’t compete with the butchers on College and Market Hall. Also, La Farine is right next to Yasai/Safway/Cole Coffee so I get all my bread there.

Grocery Outlet on University is amazing.

@ abbccc bear market is probably like 1/40th the size of any of these grocery stores and is mostly good only for frozen food and snacks like chips/candy

Order from Costco and have them ship it to you. ^_^

for those of you with a car (or patience for the bus) there are a ton of cheaper alternatives to safeway, trader joe’s, andronicos, and god forbid whole paycheck.

berkeley bowl (best produce prices and selection in the world)
grocery outlet (best for shelf stable food and items w/o expiration dates)

plus there are smart n finals/costcos/walmarts in neighboring cities and is totally worth it if you get a bunch of friends together and do a shopping trip.

i can’t give an opinion on market hall, bear market, yasai. never been before.

bear market doesn’t sell fruit. only go there if you live in the dorms and need to burn meal points.

Just curious, how much do you guys typically spend on groceries per week? My roommate and I typically spend around $50 per week for the both of us (or $25 for one of us).

that safeway is way overpriced.

Yah I usually spend anywhere from $25-30 a week.

I wonder if Lactaid milk is cheaper at Berkeley Bowl, that generally is the only thing I have to go to the grocery store for, other than soy meat and random junk food.

Berkeley Bowl is cheapest + best quality/selection for produce. Meats are kinda expensive there though, I’d go with Safeway/Costco or somewhere else.

what does the bear market sell then? how often is it open?

and for fruit, can’t you just take some from the cafeteria and keep them as snacks if you live in the dorms?

^I did that at CalSO, haha.
I also took a muffin.

You are allowed to “steal” a fruit or two after each meal. If you have a backpack on you at the time, you can stuff your backpack with fruit and “steal” more.

I don’t know how this will work in Foothill DC now due to the shift to a la carte.

That’s good, because I’m always used to having a fruit for a snack during nutrition at high school.

Random question, do the cafeterias have water bottles or anything I can grab, or do I have to buy myself a reusable water bottle and get tap?
