Shuttle, van, train, cab, hitchhiking, etc. Which company has the cheapest transportation from Providence to NYC?

Hitchhiking is free, so that’s the cheapest, but it’s hitchhiking, so that’s out.

Providence is 200 miles from NYC, so a cab would be about $800 – I think that’s prohibitively expensive. Shuttles and vans are also out.

The train is fast and very comfortable, but expensive – $50 - $120.

The cheapest way to go is by bus (Peter Pan or any of the fancy new bus lines, if they run to Providence) – around $30. It’s pretty fast and comfortable.

Megabus can be cheap ($1-25 depending on when you book your trip).

Peter Pan gives you a $35 roundtrip on a student ticket – it’s what I’ve used on all my trips to NYC so far. You can get $1 (one way) tickets on Megabus if you book early enough, but I’ve never been able to plan my trips that far ahead.

A tip for those who like credit card offers (although I know that getting credit cards is tough for under-21s with the new rules that are in effect): If you get the Amtrak credit card, you get like 10 free one-ways on the train as an opening bonus, plus another free one-way for every $2,850 you spend.

(My primary source of income in college was credit card deals )

Continental has RT flights PVD to Newark for $140 or so recently as a special. Not bad for a flight.

Bus is by far the cheapest way, taxi is insane and reflects a lack of geographical awareness, flight might be surprisingly cheap sometimes, and an Amtrak ticket can be pretty cheap if you book it ahead of time.
