So this kid cheated in an AP class of mine on a test. The teacher saw the kid cheated, verbally reprimanded the kid, and let the kid get an A on the test. Yes. An A.

This kid will likely be Valedictorian. I can't help but think that if he cheated on this test, he's been cheating throughout his high school career.

I don't want to make this about me, and I know it's not that big a deal, but were this kid not to be val it might be me.... So yeah, I'm jealous. But mostly it's a matter of principle, no matter who val would go to--there have to be others more deserving than a cheater!

It just ticks me off that there would be NO repercussions from the teacher. IMO, students who cheat on tests should automatically get a 0% for the test--at the VERY LEAST. This seems like a minimal amount of punishment. Cheating is rampant at my school, and this is why--kids don't get punished, but get all the rewards of great grades.

I'm pretty outraged.

To make the situation even more frustrating, there's not really anything I can do about it.

Nah, the valedictorian of my high school is possibly the most hard working person I know…it’s actually very admirable. You could tattle but that could have negative consequences :p. I’d probably feel the same as you do but think about it, who is the real valedictorian (cheesy huh)? There’s more honor in losing with dignity (even though you’re not really losing since you’re number 2) than winning like that, forreals. Also, it’s just a dang title, lol.

Yes, there are two girls at my school like that, although they did have to transfer religion classes because of cheating. We have a 3 strikes cheating policy. One of the girls has 2, the other has 2.5, which I don’t understand…I feel like it should either be a strike or not be a strike. One of them has already gotten into Georgetown SFS and Notre Dame. Ugh.

that is highly unfortunate, and one can only either turn to faith, or for those less inclined, myself included, just realize HS’s only the beginning. People cheat on wall street, government and just about everywhere you go. It’s an unfortunate reality of life.

It sucks because these kids are always on the “good side” of the teachers that they can get away with stuff once in a while.

I still don’t get how you can cheat DURING THE TEST. What do you do? Pull out a pile of papers from under your shirt while everyone stairs at you? Lean to your left and stare at another person’s paper/scantron?

What a coincidence, we’ve recently had a cheating scandal among my teacher’s APUSH classes. We missed a week of school because of snow, so we had to take two quizzes online. These guys took them and compiled the answers, then sent 'em out to half of the kids in my teacher’s classes.

My teacher found out somehow, soo the grades are voided and the guys lost some serious respect from the teacher and her husband (who teaches AP World at our school and most of us had him last year). But she has no physical proof anymore, so she can’t “press charges”.

I got an EFFIN’ 88 + 96 ON THEM. I am so angry. I read for 7 hours and worked sooo hard. What is even worse is that most of my friends were mad that they were caught, and not that they cheated. They are so ethical.

To quomodo: Don’t sweat it. Being salutatorian instead of valedictorian wont break your application. In other words, it wouldn’t make them want to reject you.

Why do you care if other people cheat, unless it’s a test curved to the highest score? It doesn’t affect you. I don’t care if people cheat unless it somehow ruins the curve for me. I mean, it’s not like I really care what grade they get, especially if they have to cheat to achieve it…

^well, they will end up getting awards which you could and rightfully should have gotten, and will affect your college acceptance if you both apply for same college,

Well, I’m not worried about my applications and stuff.

I know life isn’t fair, yadda yadda yadda, but I just feel that on principle the teacher really ought to have made there be some repercussions for this. The fact that this kid is likely gonna be Val is less an issue because I really want the title, but more because he doesn’t deserve that sort of recognition for being an outstanding student when he cheated.

Well, uh, the latter. Like, blatantly look at someone else’s test. I think he did that AND he glanced at his own notes.

My school has a horrible cheating problem; most kids don’t even consider it cheating to tell their friends who have a class later on in the day what’s on the test. It makes me mad…

I know there’s really nothing I can do. Just venting here. >|

I took the first half of my calculus final last week. Now, my teacher makes 2 different versions, and the person at your table always has the other version so that you don’t have to vigorously hide your answers. Still, the girl that sits next to me decided it was a brilliant idea to copy my free response answers straight from my exam, word for word (or number for number, whatever), despite the fact that we had DIFFERENT TESTS! So, it was very obvious that she cheated off of me. She received a 0 on the exam, so she did get her just dessert in the end.

But this is where I get angry! My teacher pulled me aside to lecture ME about cheating after the exam. My 100% could have been dropped to a 0 just because someone decided to cheat off of me. Luckily, my teacher was very understanding and took the time to listen to my side of the story. But if she was more strict, I’d have been screwed. I’d be out of the running for valedictorian, letters would have been sent to universities, my transcript would reflect the violation of academic integrity, and I’d probably get suspended for fighting because that girl deserves to be slapped.

Cheating doesn’t just hurt the cheater if they get caught. It hurts everyone in a class, and society at large. Some people work hard for their grades. Cheating undermines that hard work.

Ha, your valedictorian cheated on one test? My school’s valedictorian (actually, that title was retired last year) has cheated his way through several classes, breaking into the teachers’ desks and stealing tests. His AP exam grades do not substantiate his As whatsoever. He is not academically strong, and he wasn’t considered for the school’s nomination for a scholarship in the category of “academic excellence”. A much more deserving student got it. We only had one national merit scholar and it wasn’t him. The highest SAT scores were to someone in the mid-20s of the ranking system, and even if I’m leaving someone out, it is not him.

However, if it wasn’t him, it still wouldn’t be me, so my disdain is born merely out of not liking his moral character and thinking someone more deserving should be in his place.
