Cheating on Recs

this is absolutely retarded. i asked my foreign language teacher for a rec, and since his english is not that good he asked me to write an outline/resume of what i want. I felt kinda guilty, but i decided to do it anyway. but this is just...WRONG.

anyway, i think that you should NOT turn her in now, but as another poster said, let her conscience (if she has one lol) bug her down for one or two years, and then report her, so that will act as a legitimate punishment

Two points:

Someone who's willing to do something like this probably isn't going to feel guilty about it.

It makes absolutely no sense to wait for one or two years. If he's going to turn her in, he should do it now.

If you're gonna report her, do it now. Don't let her finish and pay for two years for nothing. That's beyond cruel.

She cheated and got away with it...its not your place to ruin someones life over what she claims she did in a drunken stupor. In the real world, when she cheats and it really matters, she will get what she deserves.

how about some proof before you make all these seemingly exaggerated assertions?

but last year Rice, Duke, and Berkeley all figured it out by comparing kids who applied and called our school and told them that any recommendations from this teacher will be trashed immediately and not considered.

Berkeley does not use recommendation and does not accept recommendation

My counselor actually suggested that I write my own recs and then have the teachers sign it. Even if I didnt think it was wrong, I wouldn't do it because I can't imagine writing a letter of reccomendation about myself. I think it would come off wayyyyyyyy to fake.

"how about some proof before you make all these seemingly exaggerated assertions?"

They were THERE and experienced it. What kind of proof do you want?

xcyber, you should make an attempt to know the facts from various sources before you ask for more proof from someone who experienced how they cheat in China. For a start, read this article
http://www.usingenglish.com/esl-in-china/diploma.pdf

An excerpt:

...Students cheating on tests, students engaging in plagiarism, students manufacturing fake diplomas and credentials, and school administrators' falsification of students' records are rampant practices throughout China's universities and colleges, both public and private. Of this there is neither doubt nor dispute. The question is: Why?...

Increased greed has made things worse in that country since the above article was published.

But the main point is this: US college educational system thrives on academic honesty. Cheating should not be tolerated.

Honestly this stuff about a girl writing her own recs cracks me up.

Oh yeah and if I wasn't curious to see what my teachers truly thought about me, I would have probably written my own recs too (teachers would've allowed me to).

But still I'm not commending what that girl did...that's just messed up. And stupid of her to give herself away.

Turn her in, I hate people that do this.

wow...that's really sucks for everyone else. I hate people who cheat and then beat others who actually put in the work.

Relax guys, karma will beat her down, if the OP is not manly enough to turn her in.

IF she made up stationary and represented it from as from the school that is illegal as well as immoral

I called Cornell Admissions Office and notified our school.

Our school says they will do nothing. Cornell says they will look into it, asked me to call back in a week, and notified me that they take allegations like this very seriously.

We'll see what happens.

good for you..u did the right thing

GOOO NATHAN, you'll be rewarded =)

...I have a question. Is it wrong to ask to view the letters of recommendation before your teacher/counselor sends them out? I mean, I'm asking for recs from my two favorite teachers and I'm quite sure they both like me, but I'd hate for them to say something in them that may hurt my chances. It's very unlikely...but I'd still just like to get an idea of what they say. Is it normal to ask to see the recs?

That girl must be a hell of a date.
