Hi! Please bear with me since this is my first post ever XD
Im going to get to the point. I cheated on a Chinese exam back when I was a freshmen (senior now). It bothered me for a while but I continued to do excellent in school and even managed to have over 4.0 GPA with 7 5s on my AP exams and a 2250+ on my SAT. Anyways I never cheated again after that horrifying experience.
As a senior, I am currently in the process of college applications. On the common app, it asked if I had any academic misconduct that resulted in disciplinary actions like suspension, expulsion, and dismissal. Now my problem is that although I cheated, I was not given any disciplinary actions. Just a 0 and a phone call to my parents. IDK if that qualifies for disciplinary action. I wasnt called down to the office or GC about this issue so I assume that its not in my records. Also, my Chinese teacher never told me anything about writing me up for this. But at the same time, the incident happened the last couple weeks of school and I transferred schools after my freshmen year. I know it feels wrong to check "no" but at the same time, I wouldnt want to check "yes" because I worked hard as hell and I certainly not willing to throw this all down the drain. Based on what I gave you, do you think this incident is in my records????
I did some research and mostly the community said that I should go check with the GC and if he/she isnt putting it on their recommendation, then theres no need to report it. HOWEVER, I dont even know if my GC knows about this issue and Im certainly hesitant because I might just get myself into unnecessary trouble. So I need some help and advices!
Thanks!

No, if it is not on your record, you don’t have to mention it. I would ask your GC if you can see what’s on your record or anything that they might mention, that way you can see if its there without specifically saying for what you’re looking for.

@guineagirl96 thnx so much! How are you so confident, or what reasons do you strongly believe that this is not on my records?.. And thanks I will go to GC tom. and ask whats on my record.

You said that the teacher never said anything about writing you up, just gave a zero. Usually, if you get written up, something more happens. However, it depends on the school, so you need to ask to make sure its not there. If it is on your record, you will have to address it.

I would guess that it is not in your records either. This was 9th grade, you got a 0, you didn’t get sent to the principal’s office, you didn’t get suspended, you didn’t fail the class. Moreoever, you have grown from this experience. In this particular case, I would probably say “no” . I don’t think a “0” for an assignment counts as a disciplinary action in terms of what they are saying. I normally am always on the “check with your guidance counselor” side - but I agree with you that in this case, they may not know anything and it might be better to leave it alone.

@guineagirl96 when I am looking through my records… how will I know if its on my record?? Like is it on a sheet of paper or something???

@Momof2back2back thank you so much! Actually it was an exam but I think I can safely say no,… unless calling my parents is a form of disciplinary action???

Just ask your GC. If it is something like this, as unlikely as it may be that it is on your record, I wouldn’t want to take a chance with something like this with people telling you so on CC. Just ask “Do I have anything on my disciplinary record?” Then they can tell you. You don’t have to get into specifics, and if they ask you, you could just say you are just wondering what is considered a disciplinary action. I doubt it will hurt you in any way.

@shawnspencer true thanks!

I really like shawnspencer’s idea. I think that is the perfect solution.

No problem!
