Cheating?

Hello, I recently got a zero on an assignment because my answers were the same as someone else’s answers. The thing is…I didn’t cheat. I did all the work and gave the girl some answers, but not all. This girl and I, we always share and compare answers. Well, for some reason, without me knowing, she copied all of my answers, even opinionated ones. Should I have been reprimanded for this? It didn’t affect my grade much. Bringing it down by one point.

Copying answers is considered academic dishonesty whether you are the one doing the copying or whether you are the one whose answers are being copied.

It’s unfortunate that she copied all of your answers without telling you, but she wouldn’t have been able to do that unless you gave her your assignment or something. Since it didn’t affect your grade that much, let it be a warning for the future!

Dang I would probably square up with that girl haha but in the end you did violate academic honor code so the 0 is justified. Just leave it be and don’t let anyone copy you anymore since it only brought your grade down 1 point.

She took my sheet and copied all the answers. I didn’t know until after she finished. I gave her a few factual answers, that, in fact, could have been found in a paragraph. I mean, it’s not justified, but it wasn’t my fault entirely.

Yes it was.

Well, that’s academic dishonesty right there. You cannot say that it is OK to give the girl some answers and then complain when she copies your paper. You are in the wrong. Let this be a learning experience, and consider yourself lucky that this incident did not escalate to the point that you would need to report it on your college applications.

Aren’t you in 8th grade anyway?

That escalated. I understand, and yeah, it’s in a high school class. I’ll never help anyone, as It’s not worth it. Thanks, y’all.

But you didn’t help anyone. You just let her copy you. There’s a huge difference between helping someone understand why they got a question wrong and how to find the right answer and just saying “You’re wrong, but here’s the right answer bro.”

Riff her and blaze tf out of her, then she won’t copy you again

@IrrationalPepsi how did you “give” her answers/she copy your answers without you knowing? I’m confused.

As @QuadMaster accurately said it, there is a fine line between helping someone solve a HW problem and simply giving him/her the answers. For example, most MIT classes actively encourage collaboration on psets as long as everyone attempts the problems/writes up their own solutions, and cites whom they collaborated with.

Regardless, you are lucky that that didn’t affect your grade much. In college, academic dishonesty could lead to a failing grade for the class, or in severe cases, dismissal from the university. But in this case, you were in the wrong and should fully own up to it.

Yes, I understand now. I was stricken with anger and decided to blame her for it. I now know that giving her answers was wrong. And I didn’t give her all the answers. I let her use my sheet for reference for future answers and she copied it all down. It’s good now. My teacher talked to me and said not to let anyone reference my homework, as it’s not honest on both sides. What I posted earlier was wrong. I just wanted to make her sound bad, when, in fact, I was. Sorry for all this. I’ll be honest from now on

My original post is right, the post before skieurope is wrong. (Information-wise)
