Hello, well sophmore year the day before a chem test me and another student were studying for chemistry together, just because we were both at the library studying for the same thing. well he sits behind me in class. and during the test the next day he i guess copied one section from me. but im not even sure if he did. well we got different grades on the test but we got the tests back and we had that section the same. (it was a numbering section, 1-7 or something) and the teacher assumed we cheated. So she filed an honor code violation…I tried to explain that we studied together and that i had not given or received any answers to him and that she was just speculating, that she had no proof. but i got the violation anyway. i didn’t even get a meeting with the counselor to talk to him, although it stated i would.
i was wondering two things… how do you know if your school is sending the violation to the college with your transcript? some schools hav a 1strike deal where if you cheat once but never cheat again they don’t send it to college, but i don’t know if my school does this. how do i ask my counselor if this will be on my transcript , it is very embarassing. do i ask him if i can see the transcript that is being sent? or do i ask him straight-forward?
well i will soon be applying to college and if the report is sent, how much does it hurt chances? I’m not aiming for a very good college. the 4 that im probably applying for are Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, UGA, and GSU. The student who maybe cheated off of me is now in GSU , so I know it wouldn’t matter there. But he had really low grades and such. I hav the GPA and SATs for those other schools, but I’m not sure how much this will affect there wanting to accept me. Please offer advice, pleasant advice I hope. It has been over a year and I haven’t thought of it until now because i am going to apply to college and I hardly think it is the time to tell the counsellor that it was a mistake, that I didn’t cheat. Also, he wouldn’t believe me over a teacher, especially since the other student is gone. And he probably wouldn’t admit that he cheated off of me and I had nothing to do with it.

bump...any help would be great

Ask to see your official transcript. Everyone should do this before they apply to colleges to make sure there are no errors. See what the transcript says about the incident. Since you were the "copied from" student, and never had a hearing, the violation may not have been noted.

If it does appear in your record, schedule a conference with the dean, principal or whomever is in charge of disciplinary actions. Bring a parent. You should be able to work something out amicably.

As a final resort, if the incident cannot be removed, ask that a letter of explanation from the administration be included in your application packet.

do you think this could be done over the summer? Should I call the school and ask for an appointment with the guidance counsellor during the summer? I really want this to be resolved quickly and hopefully in my favor. Also, is there anything a school can do, like have you participate in school activities, so that you prove that you learned from the 'mistake' as they would say although I didn't do anything?
The counsellor's email is on the school website, so shoudl I e-mail him and ask him for a photocopy to be sent or a meeting of the final transcript? Also, is that where the violation would show up or would it be somewhere else? And how would I go about asking him about if it would be removed?

bump--- ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated...please leave your input here. any suggestions on how i can approach the counsellor about this? or on what i should suggest i can do so that it can be removed? like what can show that i really didn't mean to help cheat or that i learned from it or anything!

I thought you said that you didn't help cheat, but that the other student copied off of your paper unbeknownst to you until the teacher handed the tests back? I don't understand why you waited until now to resolve this, since it is a very serious matter.

i didn't want to think about it until now. i didn't help cheat but they won't believe that, they'll think i purposely let him copy or something.

why don't you try to get it fixed.

go tell your conselour you did NOT cheat. don't be embaressed because you have NOTHING to be embaressed about. you did not cheat, maybe your friend did, but not you. get it settled, get it known that you did not cheat.

tell your principal, conselour, vice principal.
just get it fixed and erased.

Yes, make the appointment to view your transcript as soon as possible.

don't just view your transcript! even if your transcript doesn't say you cheated, make sure people know that you did not cheat. get te violation overturned, man. this is more than just college, it's about your dignity and shame.

how do i even know if the violation was noted though? it may have not been. i just want to see the transcript to see if it was actually noted against me. But I need to know, if an honor code is noted, does it appear on the transcript? I can look at my transcript and see if it's on there. If it is, I was noted and I will try and have that fixed. Else, it was not noted or held against me so everything should be fine. Thanks for the advice so far! And do you think gc's actually make summer appointments? If I e-mailed him would he be willing to?

go to his office and try to talk to him

get everything to talk to him/her.

this is YOUR future and image
