Check Cashing

Is there any place on campus to cash checks and what kind of fee is charged? Or are there any Wachovia or Southtrust ATM's nearby?

From what I understand, Southtrust Bank is the only one with ATMs on campus and there are quite a few. (They must have some agreement that gives them a monopoly!) There is also a free-standing bank just off campus, and there is one other bank right off campus, but I can't recall the name. I don't recall seeing any Wachovia banks.

Wachovia bought out SouthTrust so unless Vanderbilt alters the agreement, Wachovia will have all the on-campus ATMs. There's a Bank of America branch on Wedgewood ave across from Blair, two AmSouth branches a bit of a walk away from campus (one at the corner of 21st and Wedgewood at the south end of Peabody and one on 31st and West End a bit of a walk from campus), a First Tennessee Bank branch next to Borders, and the bookstore cashes checks up to 100 dollars for free.

Are you sure the on capmus banks are SouthTrust and not Suntrust?

All of the ATMs on campus are SunTrust, not SouthTrust. It would probably be easiest to set up an account with SunTrust before you get on campus.

Whoops! Yes, you are correct--it is Suntrust that has all the ATM's on campus. I am always confusing SunTrust and Southtrust because they sound alike. Sorry for the mistake. By the way, I hear there will be Suntrust reps on campus during orientation week so you can probably set up an account then if you don't have a local branch and want to use them for banking.

I thought that I read (somewhere) that students could cash a check at the Vandy bookstore if they had their Vandy ID. Is this accurate? If so, is there a limit on the amount?
