I know that check-in opens on August 30, but is it all right to move in anytime during that week?

yeah. welcome week is just for freshmen. “back to the square” is the first week of classes. i think clubfest is the first week as well.

As long as your check-in is that day or later, you can move in whenever you want. I once checked in the first day since I just happened to be in the city then moved in a week later. Nobody cared.

Sophomore D is checking in Aug 30th to hang out with roomate and get the dorm together. I understand that some of the upper classmen like to attend some of the shows in welcome week. Is that true?

I’ve definitely been to the Welcome Week activities before, and I intend to go this year in between classes (oh yes, undergrads, we law school students start two weeks earlier than you!).

In short: yes, upperclassmen attend Welcome Week shows.

But can returning students who are not freshmen move in anytime between the August 30 official move in date and the beginning of clases, and if so, do they have to let Housing know when they are coming? My kid is away at a summer theater job and won’t be able to get back to NYC until Sept. 5. Can we just drive up that day and assume it’s OK, or do we have to make specific arrangements?

You can drive up on the 5th. You don’t have to make any arrangements.

I had saved a May issue of the online NYU Parents newsletter. “All residence halls will open for Fall 2009 on Sunday, August 30th, but many returning students will move in closer to the first day of classes on September 8th.”

You can move in any day after Aug 30th. As I mentioned in an earlier post, D is sophomore and is moving in Aug 30th along with her roomate.
No, you do not need to call housing to make any arrangements.
