check problems!

We don't have a check book, so I was wondering if I could still apply non-electronically yet use a credit card? Does anyone know of a way to do that? Should I contact all of the schools im applying to and ask or should I just apply online (even thought I REALLY don't want to)?

You have two options.....your credit card can probably send you some checks as they do that. Also....you can still pay the fee by credit card either over the phone or by submitting your info....I think it is still very doable.

You can always buy a money order at a local store.

ya we dont have that here... I live in Kazakhstan and when my dad asked about making a check book they told him it would take practically forever (im not sure why).
so where do you think I should submit my credit cared info then?
thnx!

My kids' schools didn't take credit cards. If that happens to be true for yours, you may have to do a wire transfer. Call the school and ask what international students should do.

There are a lot of schools that do not accept credit cards, since they must pay 3-5% of each transaction to the credit card company. That amounts to quite a bit of money lost to them each semester....enough to pay a couple of salaries, or in some case, build a new building wing! Call or email your school and get specific info from them.

You should contact HSBC local branch and ask for an international check -or money order as NMD said. While you are it, you may inquire about opening an account/debit card. You will need some bank contacts to obtain all authorizations to travel to the US on a student's visa (proof of funds, etc.)

Lastly, your dad may talk to his employer regarding getting a check from them.

elodie, the US universities do not accept checks from foreign banks, anyway, so the checkbook would not be of much help. They will want to see a check from an American bank or a money order. I think that the banks in Kazakhstan may be able to sell you money orders if they are international banks...

o ok thank you...ill ask at HSBC
