checking it out

My jr yr D is interested in political science for a possible public policy career and also vocal music as a minor. Anyone around who could share some observations about these strengths at Wooster.

She has been to soccer camp and music camp at Wooster in some previous years and isn't gung ho on the dorms. Any comments on those? Her last time there was 4 yrs ago (however her sister was there last summer for soccer camp, too.)

I am a current student at Wooster. The Poli Sci program here is great, I personally am a Chemistry/Computer Science student, but to fill the requirements of taking classes in all scopes, I am enrolled in some Poli Sci classes. I have great professors, and I enjoy the classes the most in terms of lectures, discussions, and learning activities/simulations.

Yes, the dorms are not attractive, I personally am in probably one of the ugliest. But some of them are great, and even though off-campus living is not allowed, except for very few exceptions, there is the chance to live in one of several of the houses. Also, it really shouldn't matter how they look, it is what is inside that matters, and they are respectable in size with loftable furniture.

I saved the best for last - music. The vocal groups here are great, there are several a capella groups, by gender and mixed gender groups, and a great chorus. Although the dorms are ugly, the academic buidlings are beautiful and have some of the latest and greatest technology, including the main building, Kauke, which was just completely renovated. The music center is probably the best looking building, and there are plenty of classes realted to music, and related extra-curriculars

Harrison, thanks for the info and your forthrightness about the dorms. We will be visiting Wooster on Nov 6th. My D will be visiting a music theory class and a pol sci class on politics and elections.

My D and I visited Wooster today Nov 6 '06. It started out cold, but turned into a nice, warm fall day. (Wooster is only 35 miles from our home.)

Keep in mind, my D first choice continues to be Grinnell which she visited this summer and everything is in comparison to it. (She has also visited Allegheny, Heidleberg, Carleton, Macalester, OH Wesleyan and Goshen).

At this point Wooster would be her 2nd choice. Our tour guide was a jr whose father is a prof at Hope College. She was a music major and really helped my D get good info on it. The tour was a bit too quick from my perspective, but my daughter has in previous years one week each at soccer camp and band camp at COW. Also, her present oboe instructor is the oboe instructure at COW and the colleague of her present voice instructor (outside of her hs music program) is a voice instructor at COW. My D kept commenting that she liked COW, even though it was close to home it still felt like it was "a different world" from home.

Her interview went well. The guidance counselor felt more real to her than at least one of the comparable kind of schools. In light of her grades and test scores so far, he strongly encouraged her to stay in touch with him.

We had lunch at the Lowery Center (student center) which is a nice bldg. Good cafeteria. Bookstore is one of the best I have seen for a LAC. The campus doesn't feel small, but it is easy to walk around. There is one trafficed street that goes through the campus. There are a number of pedestrian crossings and it appeared easy to cross at any number of places, but it was the main negative for my D.

She visited an intro music theory class and a pol sci "Politics and Elections" class. Our guide had encouraged her to answer a question if she felt like it because she (the guide) had done that when she visited COW and went to the music theory class. Well, my D did. Apparently no one else in the class could answer the question. My D raised her hand and answered it. (she has had 3 years of theory at her visual and performing arts hs). It surprised the prof. He said to her that that was good for a hs sr. She told him she was a jr. He couldn't believe it, the whole class groaned, and they all laughed about it.

In the other class it was a review for a test on Wed. New prof. A bit scattered, but after a while he got into it. Good conversation which I think made my D feel at home because a lot of her view points were shared.

The Admissions office had some problems with emailing us info on the visit because of yahoo (I noticed this with one other place this week too). But, they were very helpful. The admissions office is a nice place. It looks like they will pick up prospective students because while we were waiting a COW van brought in a girl on her own.

I would say that it will depend on how Grinnell will respond to her app and then how much money is available if Wooster becomes the top choice.

Deloar- Not to hijack this thread, but could you talk a little about Ohio Wesleyan? (Or you could post on that thread.) Thanks!

I will post comments on that forum about Oh Wesleyan.
