CHEM 053/054 Lab Credit, CHEM 101/102 Placement Test

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a senior who'll be attending Penn coming fall 2012, and I have two questions about chemistry.

I already took the AP Chemistry course this year, but it looks like I'll need to take placement tests for CHEM 101, 102 credits even with a 5 on the AP exam.
If there are people who took the exam before, how difficult was it compared to the AP Chem course?

My high school probably isn't on the Penn database for credit for labs either.
How difficult is it for new student to get lab waiver? I have my notes / lab reports, but the latter isn't too strong.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Bump on this issue! I definitely want to know how hard it is compared to the AP exam. I mean, I know they just ask for a C or higher to pass the placement test, but still, I assume Penn’s exams aren’t easy.

I passed out of chem 101 as a freshman. While I didn’t think the test was impossible, it was much harder than the AP (which is not at the same level as a test you will take in college for the most part). You will most definitely have to study because there is a significant amount of material not covered on the AP exam. Chem 101 and 102 assume you have taken calculus, so the courses go into more depth mathematically than AP chem. They covers molecular orbitals and many aspects of quantum chemistry that are not mentioned at all in AP chem.

@Poeme, would you by any chance know some places where we can find study materials for such topics?

Your best bet is probably to buy the book, which you can find online here:
