Hey I'm signed up for chem 101 but i still cant get into 101L because they're all either waitlisted or closed. I really need to take the lab part, so does anyone think they'll eventually open up, or does anyone have any suggestions if they don't?

I’d go ahead and e-mail the professor (Volaric, right?) and ask her VERY POLITELY if you can be a part of one of her classes. I’ve never spoken to her, but I’m sure that if you are nice enough, she’ll let you in. It’s worked for me before!

Though its not ideal, when I signed up at CTOPS (I couldn’t get into the lab at the time), the advisor said you could take 101L in the spring after taking 101 in the fall. Just keep looking though cause you may get lucky and find an opening.

Yea I’ll probably wait it out a few more days, and if nothing has opened up yet, then I’ll go ahead and email the professor. Thanks!

I’d go ahead and e-mail before everyone else starts doing it. I e-mailed a teacher yesterday of a class that was completely full and he let me in immediately. Why wait? :]

Just fyi - Lisa Volaric is the lab director, she doesn’t teach the labs (thank god). She is a b*tch, and that is putting it nicely! Every lab section has a TA, and the TA is basically your professor for lab. Spots in the labs will definitely open up once school starts. Maybe wait until next week and then send her a VERY, VERY nice email about it. I do not recommend taking the lab separate from the class, but I’ve had friends resort to that with the upper level labs. Good luck!

Did the class they let you into have a waiting list?

Yep, there was a waiting list. I was number 3 on that list, though, and I explained that I was wanting to minor in Spanish for the Professions and REALLY needed to start off my Spanish sequence.

i actually have the same problem but i can’t get into chem 102l… my advisor at ctops told me not to sweat it because they like to have students take the lab and lecture together and the instructors will make sure you get the lab if you need it

There is a placement exam for chem 101L that takes place the first week. If you have experience with college level chemistry I HIGHLY recommend you take it because chem lab is awful. Once the placement exam is over a lot of seats will open up from people that don’t have to take the lab. There should be info on placement exams in week of welcome info you’ll get. If you pass the exam, you don’t have to take the lab.

Hey, I was wondering if you knew anything about the placement exam for the lab only…as in, what’s on it. I heard that basically you needed to know the equipment used and how to identify the beakers, flasks, etc. Is this it? Or is there more actual Chemistry stuff on it?

If I have DE credit for Chem 101L but not Chem 101, will I be okay just taking Chem 101 in the spring?

The lab placement exam is a lot more than just knowing the lab equipment. It is really heavy on calculations with the mole.

@corey91, yes it is fine just to take Chem 101 on its own. A lot of people do that.

Knowing the lab people, the lab placement exam is probably made to screw you over… LOL! The finals you take in lab at the end of the semester are usually bizarre, so I would think the placement one is too. That being said, I don’t think I know anyone who took the placement exam… Maybe they are pushing it more now then they did back in the day.

Is it placement exam multiple choice? And, by mole calculations, are we talking about converting it gass/particles/mass? (The whole “mole highway” thing I vaguely remember from 10th grade…)
