Chem 101 Placement Exam preparation advice?

Can anyone comment on the difficulty of the chem 101 exam and/or the pass rate? I think UNC gives you credit for chem 101 if you earned a 3 on the AP exam. S did not have APs at his high school so never took the exam but had a full year of (rigorous) chem his junior year and a year of org chem his senior year. He really wants out of chem, but Carolina only gives you one try at its placement exam. Can he review an AP chem book this coming week (10-20 hours) and squeak by the exam this friday. . . or would he be smarter to spend more time preparing over the summer and attempt it next fall? Suggestions for what he should be sure to review/focus on?? Thanks.

I think reviewing AP Chem won’t help him that much. I don’t know much about the placement exam, but UNC Chem Department says that it is the same exam it used for the final exam. As you know, AP is so much easier than the college chem, esp. UNC Chemistry.

I would recommend to take Chem 102 (or whatever your son wants) in community college or somewhere during summer (he MIGHT still have to take the placement exam after taking it in other institutions).
