UCLA store lists the book's ISBN is 9781429270656
In amazon I cannot tell if it contains the textbook, th solution manual and model kit.
Can any of you please confirm?

you could get away with purchasing the latter one because the information is basically the same, you might not get some stuff. The major differences between the two other than the year it was published is the page numbering and if this book contains problems then the numbering might be off and there might be some new problems in the other book that you won’t get with the 2009 edition.

It looks like both of those books are 5th edition so i don’t think one is the newer version. It looks to me like the first one is the student solutions manual and the second one is the actual textbook. I’m taking the 20/30 series and i didn’t need a model kit until I started ochem. It was the same case for all of my friends in the 14 series. You shouldn’t really have a need for a model kit until 14c. Just get the book and the solutions manual, but keep in mind that there may be a course reader for the class as well which are pretty pricey so plan your budget accordingly

@brosiedon I think the first one on Amazon.com: Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight (9781429270656): Peter Atkins: Books lists a wrong picture. It should be a textbook. What I don’t understand is they are both 5th edition but from different year. The price of this textbook at UCLA sotre is a little less expensive than the first one, and much more than the 2nd one.

@brosiedon THANK YOU SO MUCH! UCLA store listed all are requred (book+study guide & soluton + model kit) and the price is lower than the same one in amazon.

For Scerri you don’t need to buy the textbooks. I’ve never opened mine once.

When it comes to textbooks, I no longer buy the books before the quarter starts. Some books/coursereaders are not returnable and unnecessary. I just go to my classes for the first week and find out if the books are absolutely required. If so, I would I would order it online that night (usually prices online are cheaper, but not always). The book takes a few days to ship so I also go purchase the used version of the books at the bookstore (avoid bookstore at beginning of week 1). I use this book for about a week or so until my online order comes in. The UCLA bookstore allows you to return books for full refunds on books up to week 2. This is a good way to save money and avoid wasting books you don’t really need.

azngamer is right about Scerri’s class. If you get Scerri, you really won’t need the book. I had him for 20a and I used the book once for the optional homework problems. His class is really coursereader heavy, if you learn it front and back you will most likely get an A. That’s what I did and I got an A+. His syllabus says you will need the model kit in 14b, but he’s probably just saying that because they do a short intro to organic chem in 14b. You really won’t need it till 14c.
