Chem 14a: Lavelle or Scerri?

I'm an incoming freshman and was wondering if it's better to take 14a this fall with Lavelle or wait until winter to take it with Scerri (who is not on Bruinwalk). Any opinions?

From my experience, I had both =P, scerri is very concept and random facts oriented. He preaches out of his course reader and shapes his midterms from them along with his final. Scerri also has online quizzes on thinkwell. He can be cruel and make fun of students, but I guess it makes going to class interesting. Lavelle is a great prof who cares about his students and is on the nicer side. He is very equation and problem solving oriented in his midterm and final but you have to go to discussions because you have quizzes then. His lectures can get really booooooring. Honestly, if you arent taking another science or math class, just take it this quarter if youre already enrolled. Good Luck!!!

Scerri is on bruinwalk.

I hope mnop answers this. (:

I had Lavelle. Just take him, since he’s a nice teacher and he’ s VERY straightforward. No surprises or anything, he gives you all you need in his course reader. People opt to take Scerri since they he’s supposedly a little easier, but the difference is negligible IMO.

The thing is, chemistry 14A is the easiest science class you take (im talking pre reqs). It serves as the first cut out for students who want to be pre med/pre pharm / pre dental/ etc. but are not able to handle the coursework. It only gets harder from here. (although some people love ochem + biochem.)

If you study hard, you’ll be fine and have plenty of extra time, so enjoy your freshman year! It only comes once

you’re insane, imo chem is crazy hard, and physics and ls aren’t too bad (but then again it’s probably because i dont have a background in chem)

Yeah, I’ve been debating this too. The whole reading out of the course reader and conceptual chemistry with Scerri sounds tempting…

Wonder if it’ll hurt my GPA too much taking chem with Lavelle?

Which professor prepares you more for the MCAT?

take lavelle… that way you’ll be on track for chem… and i heard lavelle helps more on mcat, anyways.

I actually heard Scerri prepares you better for the MCAT, considering his exams are mostly conceptual which is what the MCAT tests.

Well it’s either Chem 14A with Lavelle or LS1 with Pires. Who’s worse? Haha.

I’ve had Scerri and i’ve had friends that have lavelle… lavelle goes more into-depth than scerri and helps you in the long run…

Even if one’s a better teacher, you should still go for Scerri. Two reasons:

1) The experience. Because in life you will have to deal with people like Scerri, so it’s good to get that kind of experience beforehand in a relatively harmless environment. (meaning–Scerri might point and laugh at you in front of the entire lecture, but at least he can’t take away your job or livelihood.)
2) There are usually much more people enrolled in Scerri than in whoever else is teaching the course (be that Baugh, Lavelle, or whoever), so especially if you’re a freshman dorming–it’s good to have Scerri since, chances are, you’ll have “numerous” floormates who are also taking Scerri with whom you can more easily network.

And you HAVE to see the Scerri vs. preacher video! Watch it on youtube RIGHT NOW!!!
