Chem 151L (orgo chem)

is their a text book for this class? if so, what is it?

how do the instructors grade the labs?

In general, how did you like the class?

thanks

Last time I checked:
Marc Loudon: Organic Chemistry (Check for new edition)

Unlike 23 labs, 151 labs are not graded on accuracy, but you still have to be very concise and scientific in your writings. It is not "hard" to get full credit, but you do have to make sure you know what you're talking about.

The class was decent. If you're a freshman taking it, Professor Hong (the freshmen section professor) is not the best lecturer and has poor handwriting (haha... At least 20 times... Student: "What kind of acid is HA???" Hong: "That's an F, its HF"), but the topic is interesting. A fair amount of memorization is required, but if you study hard, you can do well.

Haha, this brings back some freshman Orgo memories!
Took me away from being a Chem major or whatever it was I wanted to do, lol.

Yea, I'm actually not going to lie either. First semester freshman year I was about 50-50 whether I wanted to be Premed or Grad/Business. All the memorization in Orgo (plus having to take Orgo II) pushed me over the edge. I'm now BME/Econ.

Yes, I know you can reason your way through most reactions and mechanisms, but some things you flat out have to memorize... which I can't handle. If you have a really good memory, you will love Orgo.

Book is as mentioned before, Marc Loudon's Organic Chemistry (ISBN:9780195119992), you can get it for fairly cheap buying it online from other people.

The instructor grades labs according to a set rubric of list of things/points you need to have hit or included with your lab report. Usually the list of things will be given to you in the lab handouts or you'll need to answer specific questions to address those points. Labs aren't graded on accuracy so if you mess up, include a thorough error analysis. Chem 151 labs tend to be graded pretty leniently (at least my TA did, I lost maybe 5 points the entire semester :)) so you've got nothing to worry about. One thing to keep in mind though, to the best of my knowledge, the professor who ran the labs, Dr. Sebahar, has left Duke, so the labs and how they are graded might change starting next year.

Overall, I liked 151, it's not as intense as 152 and it's a great way to ease into orgo. It's not easy by any means, but pretty manageable. It also helps if your teacher can crack a joke now and then.

WHAT, Sebahar is gone? I was hoping to have her this year... :(

Yeh, she moved to Utah because of a job opportunity that was offered to her husband. Really a great loss for Duke. (stupid Utah!)
