Will the workload required for these two classes be too much over the summer?

probably, i wouldn’t do it

chem 1a is ALOT of work. give you a heads up.

i took it over the summer and the part that i hated the most about it was the lab. I took one of the TTh labs so after my Tuesday lab, i had to work on a post lab for the tuesday lab and a prelab for the thursday lab. so much work to do mid-week.

but without the chem lab, i guess it would be manageable. oh yeah, for this summer, UC Berkeley is starting to split Chem 1A (4 units) into Chem 1A (3 units) and Chem 1AL (1 unit). So if you really want, take only the lecture portion of Chem 1A on top of Bio 1B

The labs take a LONG time but they do so in the fall/spring as well. If it were me, I’d get them over with. These are both intro classes so they aren’t excruciatingly hard.

Thanks for the input guys. I was also wondering, If I hope to major is MEB, or any other science major, will the lab portion for chem 1a be required?

most likely, lab component would still be required. you eventually have to take it. if the chemistry department eventually decide to permanently split the current chem 1a into chem 1a and chem 1al (this summer is the trial phase), most departments or colleges would likely amend their own academic requirements to reflect the changes in the curriculum for chem 1a.

In theory, making Chem “1AL” optional for majors would be a horrible idea. Chem 1A “lecture only” is, for the most part, a math-based course with very little actual chemistry. The lab portion is where you actually do something. They’re not all that practical, but hey, at least you get to mess around with actual equipment and molecules. I can’t even remember a single chem 1A lab at the moment though lol.

Anyways, those two together or individually aren’t difficult during a regular semester. But the lab time gets compounded during the summer, so be prepared to be stuck in lab for a long long time!

So would be ok to take the chem 1a lab concurrently with Chem3a in the fall?

Sure, but you would probably want to take Chem 3A with Chem 3AL at the same time. Tying in the labs makes things a lot easier (what you’re learning is reinforced, etc).

I have a similar question. Because this is a trial phase for summer, do any of you know whether or not the 1AL LEC and 1AL LAB will be offered in the fall separate from the LEC/DIS? I’d really like to split them up with the 1A LEC/1A DIS even though I understand, as you all have mentioned, that it would be better to take them simultaneously. Also, is 1AL LEC a lecture explaining the lab of the week?

I would get it out of the way if I were you. Honestly, if I had the opportunity to do it in the summer, I would’ve. I don’t think it’s a lot of work if that’s your only class but with bio 1b, you’ll have 2 labs and that might be a pain but manageable. My friend had to do writeups or something in his bio class but I didn’t in mine. So you basically attend the lab (and study for the small quiz beforehand). Chem labs…prelabs are easy. 2 questions usually, answer is online if you really need help. Postlab…sometimes it’s a little tough but SLC helps you out.

Thanks guys for your input. I’ve reduced myself to two options. Either chem 1a/al without bio 1b/1bl or Chem1a, lec only with bio 1b/1bl. The reason I wanted to take bio 1b is because i dont want to risk not getting the class in the fall or the spring since i need it to apply for public health. What do you guys suggest?

bump…
