Chem 1A final = crazy?

I feel for these guys though. When I took this class couple years ago, Chem 1A was never as hard as what people are saying now.

Realistically, they have to lower the cut off by some amount. These courses generally run the A and A- range at about 30%~ of the class, typically even higher for Chem 1a I've heard. To not lower the cut off at all, and only give, for example, 5%-15% A/A-'s, would not be permissible. In addition, that email was sent prior to the final exam. I doubt even they expected us to struggle as much as we did, judging from Stacy's pre-final talk about how after this class everyone should feel that they can "do it". Apparently something went wrong.

What about a "B".... **** I had a solid 80% and this brought it down to a 74% and at this current trend will end up at around a 70%....dammit....there goes graduate school.

does anyone know if grading is any more generous for spring 09 chem 1a with nitsche?

Pick-A-Prof shows the grade distributions and Spring '09 with Nitsche is suppose to be LESS generous awarding less "A" and "B" and more "C" than fall for Stacy.

yay.......

what do you guys think: 88-90: A- ; 90+: A ?

o btw...according to my calcs, there are a total of 10 bonus pts + 6 bonus iclicker pts to be awarded right?

my friend got a 81% as on bSpace. Is that like a B? Will A- be lowered to 81%? She is deathly worried.

If it's true what Equiether says, then that's good news.. because i'm sure less than 7% got A's after plugging in the MC grades.. they would have to lower the cutoffs then right?? Ugh, I don't want a C in my first semester.. They said this wasn't a weeder class, but it's making me doubt if I should stay as a premed!

BlueElmo, currently to get an A, you have to have atleast an 88%..so yeah she would get a B, unless they change it.

PLEASE let 90% be an A!!!!
also, any idea on how many bonus points we will be given (minus the iclicker)?
hey btw, does 90.45 round as 91? or 90?

hope this turns out well for you guys.

welcome to finals, when taking the biggest exam of the year rarely helps your grade. (at least it never has for me, even in HS)

my grade dropped a solid...10 percent ...hahah
sucker punched. ouch. i was at 90 percent before the exam.. man. :(

Chem 1A... I loved the professor, hated the class. Same thing occurred with Chem 3A.

Anyways, last semester 880 was an A-, 850 were the lowest A-s.

so 900 was an A?

santabarbara:

If A > and = 880 and 900 > 880...I think you're smart enough to figure the rest of this out yourself...

Everyone else:

According to the email, it says that that the bspace grade is falsely low plus I think they're supposed to take into account how tough midterm 1 is.

^
according to what email..
there wasn't an email saying how tough midterm 1 was..
final was too effing hard

Plus Douskey insisted the cut-off will be what it says on the course syllabus. which means im efffeeeddd

hey dil_scout...the syllabus says >800 is an A and <800 is a B. So obviously, somewhere inbetween 800 and 1000 is the cutoff between an A and an A-
so my question is, what is that magic number?

I have a 72.45% do you think once the extra credit is added in correctly I can make it into the 73% "B-" range

calbear...the math is simple: according to my calcs, there are 10 bonus pts for surveys etc. then there are 6 bonus pts for iclickers (that cannot exceed the total of iclickers)
assuming you missed more than 6 pts in the iclicker and did all bonus things, then you have 16 bonus pts pending. the total is 1000 pts. 16 of 1000 is 1.6%.

your new grade will be 72.45+1.6 > 73 = B-
