I'm struggling in Chem 1A because I haven't taken AP chem and might drop it and take it in the spring. I hear it's easier in the spring? Is that true even though there's no curve? If so, how would it be easier?

Yeah, the course is on an absolute scale so there isn't a curve. So if there is no curve, then it would be the same material and not be any easier. That's what I'm guessing.

If you think you're struggling, you could take Chem P (I don't know if it is still open, anyone?) which would prepare you and then you can take Chem 1a in the spring.

Yeah, I would have to agree that those who have not taken AP chem are at a disadvantage.

My high school didn't have AP Chem, and the chemistry I did have wasn't terribly strong, but I'm doing ok thus far. You can PM me your midterm score if you really want, but keep in mind that this is college, and you're not going to get A's in a class with new material unless you work your tail off. Be patient, and remember that everyone's going to have to take classes where they're learning things for the first time too.

If your schedule is stacked right now with tough classes, it could make sense to put of 1A until spring, but don't get too far behind. Everyone's going to get challenged eventually, it'll just take longer for some than others. FWIW, I got a 47 (not percent), which will effectively curve up 12% or more going by the syllabus. If chem is one of 3 (or more, you masochist) technicals you're taking right now, then it could definitely make sense to put it off if your schedule's going to be easier next semester.

I hate chem, in highschool I took chem honors during summer school, I barely studied. I got an A- in Chem 1A in spring 08. C+ and A in 3A/L this summer

08Holla, I got higher than a 47 (low 50s) but it’s still a “B” =( I’m taking 3 technicals but only Chem is really time-consuming/hard because of my lacking chem background. I have enough AP credit that I wouldn’t fall behind but I don’t know… I looked at last year’s 1A midterm (the one on Bspace) which was really easy… but ours was MUCH harder so I don’t know how long I will be able to survive if I stick with Chem 1A this semester. I really want an A and nothing else

anon5524485, do you remember how you did on the first midterm? And back to my original question, any idea if Spring will be easier than Fall? Maybe in terms of difficulty of exams/questions?

92-ish mt1
85-ish mt2
90-ish mt3
79-ish final

all are percentages
