Chem 1A textbook(s)?

So my professor is Arasasingham, and he has not responded to my e-mails yet so I gave this a shot.

I have still yet to buy my textbooks because I was wondering if the Chemistry book by Raymond Chang 10th edition is the same as the 9th edition. a link for the change log would be nice I guess, but I just need to know if there is any difference between the two books. If not, I am going to buy the 9th edition and save some money.

thanks alot CC!

p.s. If anyone can help me with:
PKG-CALCULUS 6TH 2VOL 2AB & 2DE/ONLINE SOL MAN & TUTORIALS
STEWART
ISBN:9781428250291
83.80 UCI Book store
(I'm U/U but trying to get into civil engineering, so I was just going to plan to buy this book at the UCI store because I'm probably going to be using it for a while, but if you guys have a site for a lower price then hook me up! haha thanks alot)

the books are likely the same in terms of information. the only problem would be if you are assigned problems from the book; then the numbers might not match up. you could always go to the library at that point and read/learn from the 9th edition as needed. I haven’t actually looked at the two books, so i don’t know. keep in mind, you may need to use this book if you take chem 1b and 1c, and who ever ends up teaching those may use the book even more. or not.

do you recommend that I just buy the 10th edition book? (I have financial aid and found a couple books a few bucks cheaper elsewhere the only books that I would have to pay full price on would be this chem book and my Calc book above)

personally, i would consider not buying the book at all. you’ll only need the book for two reasons:

to read info/learn the material. you can do this with a different edition. or even a different book. it’s gen chem, not advance rocket physics.

to do practice problems, possible for homework. you could just go to the library and borrow the book and do the homework there/copy the pages. if you are living in the dorms, there will be someone who bought the book- maybe you can borrow from them.

if money is an issue, you can ALWAYS find copies through friends/libraries.

I had Arasasingham for chem 1A.
He told us any edition is fine.
He also told us not to buy the solution manual.

He doesn’t assign homework from the book.
Your homework is online. It’s called WileyPlus and it can be fun sometimes but it’s usually not. Your new hated word will be “reset.”

He assigns OPTIONAL practice problems in the book.
Most people didn’t do them but I did.
I didn’t read the book though.
Oh yeah, I remember when he sent out the e-mails with the practice problems, he specified the ones in the 10th edition and those in the 9th edition so you should be fine with the 9th edition.

Like flemmyd said, if don’t buy the book but you’re living in the dorms, you’ll be able to borrow the book from someone because many freshmen take chem.

Thanks for all this info and thanks for the heads up on the solutions manual too!
