Chem 2 + Calc 2 + Princ. Biology, one semester

My advisor people are telling me that taking general chem 2, calc 2, and the general principles of biology class (forgot the exact name) in the same semester (second, freshman) is a bad idea. Just those three classes for a total of 12 hours or something. Does it seem manageable, or are they right.

Seems like a typical schedule that science majors (especially premeds) take. I did the same thing and took an additional writing class and did fine.

Will taking only three courses for 12 credits put you behind schedule as to the number of courses or credits you need to graduate in 8 semesters?

I took those 3 classes, 2 labs, and an intensive Spanish course in the same semester. If you’re a science major that’s typical. Are your advisers in the science department? If they aren’t, they probably don’t know what they’re talking about.

I don’t think I would disagree with your advisers. I mean, I’m taking Animal Bio, Animal Bio Lab, Cell Bio, Cell Bio lab and two additional classes this semester (one Bio, one is my last gen ed). But I’m a junior. It’s not something I would have done as a freshman.

The classes themselves aren’t too bad on their own and you will have to take multiple science classes/labs before you finish your degree, but unless you came in with a butt-load of AP credit or whatever, you still should have a fair amount of gen eds to take at this point that you don’t want to hold you back as you get further along. Do you still need English 102 (or whatever) some history classes? Go for a more balanced schedule as a freshman, I think.

I would take two of those three classes and one or two gen eds. If you start just taking 12 credit hours a semester, you might not finish on time unless you plan on taking a good deal of gen eds during the summer (which also isn’t something I’d recommend if you are pre-med. That’s when you should start volunteering at hospitals, shadowing doctors or trying to get into research not cramming in whatever humanities or foreign languages you need).

It was some general advisor that came in for one of the classes. Don’t know his department, though. I asked him about my situation and he advised against it.

I’m a science major, yeah. I’ve got a bunch of harder science classes right around the bend in addition to some other random classes, so I thought, might as well bag Chem 2 now to save me trouble later, right?

And yes, the reason I’m in this situation is because I have AP credit out the ass. I’m done with my English requirements after this semester, so I’m probably ahead of the game regardless of what I do. Just don’t want to be in an even harder situation when 2nd year comes around.
