Son and I are debating a concern about lecture/discussion times and possible cross-sections. Son is registered for a heavy day on Fridays from 9:35 - 4:55 (7 periods), with no breaks and campus-hopping back and forth between chem, physics and math. Ideally, he would like to move his Chem 2045 discussion from 5th period Friday to Wednesday and keep his original chem lecture time (MWR, 10th). The only Wednesday discussions that he could go to belong to lectures on MWR, 11th period, but he doesn't want later lectures. I contend that he could try for the MWR, 11th lecture and Wed. discussion during drop/add and then just physically go to the earlier lecture (same prof.). Son is sure they will take some sort of attendance and he can't just mix and match however he wants.

What say you, experienced ones? Thanks!!

Go to the textbook list on isis. See if the professor he will take it with requires that he buy a clicker. If so then there will be attendance/clicker points. If not, then it is quite likely that there will be no form of attendance.

if its the same teacher then it can work out nicely with your idea if there is no attendance. plenty of people mix and match, its a frequent thing in college. you just have to keep track of when in-class assignments/quizzes/tests occur. If there are no clicker points for your teacher then its almost never in 2045 because exams are assembly and quizzes take place during discussion.

either way if discussion on friday is really an issue then add the 11th period one with wed discussion. he will come to find that going to class in the evening is not so bad when you are a freshmen (i am assuming he is one and is living on campus) and are only a hop skip and a jump away from where you live versus upper classman who have to take the bus schedule into account. I mean if he cant have a better section overall with lecture and discussion then he cant have it both ways i guess.

I took CHM 2045 last fall. No attendance was ever taken in class. In fact, by the end of the semester, I would say only a quarter of the class actually showed up. If you go to a different lecture, you should make sure it’s with the same teacher because although all the teachers give the same exams, the quizzes can be different.

Lol, I took chm2045 last fall and I NEVER went to class. Unless they only just changed the policies for this upcoming year, none of the chem classes require attendance.

so whats the difference between the lectures and the discussions? Are the classes smaller, is there actually a disccussion? I guess it’s an odd question, but I didn’t even know UF did 50min classes 'til I went to preview.

lecture is obvious, its when the professor lectures to the entire class as assembled in the hall. discussion is when you go to a smaller classroom that has you and a few other students and you discuss topics that may have confused you or you are struggling with with your TA. Although part of the time discussion periods are used for quiz administration.
